Can RefMan import "nested" journal citations?

RIS-List,
My library at work subscribes to a table of contents service that groups
the contents of journals by journal and does not repeat the journal
name, volume number, and issue number for each article in an issue.
Will Ref Manager import records like this. The import routine in Ref Man
would have to remember the journal name and volume number, etc. from the
first article and use it to complete the article reference for all
subsequent articles in the volume/issue no. Can a filter be written
using the Import Editor so that Ref Man will do this?
An example of one TOC report (for an issue from each of two journals) is
shown below.

Not sure why, but this listserv reformatted the import record examples I
included with my post. Here they are again. Hope the don't get
reformatted again but they may. Suffice to say, the records are well
formatted in real life.
Basically, there are two records in the table of contents data to
import. One is the table of contents for an issue of Sociological
Methods and Research, and the other is for The American Political
Science Review.
The problematic feature of these records that I do not know how to deal
with is that each article in the journal issue lists only the author,
title, and pages, and not the journal name, volume, and issue. The
latter has to be remembered from one article to the next.
Can this be done in RM 11.0? THat's my question.

Dear John,
Hi. I think the problem is how the database was designed. It lumps the
journal name the volume and issue into one field, namely the JN field .
This is sloppy design of records and the database provider is NOT
providing a quality record.
One idea is to load the records from a bibliographic library database
instead of the table of contents database These databases are much more
compatiable with Reference Manager. I think there is a database called
sociological abstracts or something similar.

Hi John,
not shure if some clever guy found a way to programm this, but from very long experience I doubt it.
Way around:
Just take your import file and add the missing lines in a word-editor. That is a little work, but straight forward, safe and quick. You know what you get. :-))

| Re: Can RefMan import "nested" journal citations? |

I don't think it will. The solutions I can think of are either to do a
search-and-replace in Word, putting the relevant information in front of
each citation (which shouldn't be too difficult, but would have to be
done for each journal separately), or to see if you can import the
citations into a temporary database and then edit them there.
However I will be interested if anyone can come up with a more effective
solution!
Good luck
