I am replying to Karyn's email as a way to ask the list server group --- I
am considering moving from paper files to PDF files for articles. Have any
of you experience in setting this up (e.g., what field) and is it worth it?

Thanks..

It's an option in 9.5, but you may not realize what you're seeing.
Spaces are indicated by a single dot midway up the line. Periods are
indicated by a single dot at baseline. The difference can be highly
confusing.

Or have I misunderstood your question?

It is very easy to set up. You only have to insert the location of your
pdf file in the field WEB/URLs:
For example :
WEB/URLs: g:\articles download\Am J Physiol Regul Int Comp
Physiol\Lutz(#10669).pdf

To acces the pdf file, you click on the small icon on that
field. Simple and easy !!

Dear Gary,
I have a simple solution, which works fine for me.
Use the Web/URL field and type something like C:\papers\Novack_G.pdf and
put all your pdf-files into C:\papers.
As there are no other fields allowing a hyperlink, this works fine and
brings up
the paper on a mouseclick, assuming Acrobat reader is installed.
Hope this helps.
Lutz

I just use a slight variation on all the others' schemes: I have
subdirectories for each journal under a PDF directory, and store the papers
as vol-page number.pdf. That's info that automatically comes up in a
search in RefMan, and thus I avoid having to type the whole path into
RefMan. I did the path+filename thing for a while, but tired of it. I'll
go back in a second, if you could browse to the location and insert the
path+filename automatically.

Hi, Gary,

I think this came up, in a slightly different guise, and the consensus
was you can use the URL line to point to the location of the PDF file.
Just be sure that you use a path that will be valid for all users. (On
our network version, I have to keep explaining to people that the server
on which RefMan resides must be the same drive letter for ALL users or
things will go awry when they put the pieces of the grants together.)

The other note I would make is that faculty tend to be much happier when
they have the ability to mark up articles--electronic highlighting, as
it were. In which case they (a) want to be able to download the article
to their own drive easily and (b) need access to a program that will
allow them to do the markup. I don't know what might work.

Cheers,
Karyn Popham

Acrobat (full version) will allow such things as highlighting, adding
comments, and adding the refid# to the front page.
