Hi all:
Struggling with colleagues using EndNote. 6 on a PC and 8 on a Mac.
Any suggestions as to how to exchange databases would be welcome. I got
the enl file from Endnote 6 imported, but with considerable errors
(either import or original), but the endnote 8 file from the Mac didn't
work at all. Something like error 14 came up.
Thanks in advance for any help. The RIS website didn't help me ...

I just struggled with this using RefMan11 on PC and Endnote9 on Mac.
Exchange by RIS format as suggested by the Vendor works very, very
badly.
As the products are sold by the same company now, you would think this
would be easier.
The best I could do was to create a bibliographic style in RefMan that
output stuff in a style akin to the PubMed format. Then use Tools >
Bibliography > Generate from Reference list. You can get out just about
everything you need by including the abstract, keywords, other elements.
On the EndNote side, you need an import filter that is customize for
this as well, to pull the stuff in.
Stay tuned. Tomorrow I will post again to this site and will attach the
versions I made of these. Not clear if these will get through list
manager.

Dear Mr. Palermo,
Could youtell me something about the export using the RIS format as an
exchange method between EndNote and Reference Manager?
Why do you not recomend it: what goes wrong?
In the past I converted from EndNote 4-8 to Reference Manager and things
seemed to be ok when I checked it.

Hello Everyone,
For years I have struggled, with little success, with the importing of
citations from Ovid's PsycInfo database at the U of Montreal. I have
contacted RIS's help desk, the U of Montreal librarians, I have tried to
write my own filters, but to no avail. I find that there are too many
reference types (books, book chapters, articles, dissertations, etc) and
that their formatting is too complicated for me to handle this task.
So I was wondering if any of you may have some filters that work with
this database or some other kind of advice on how you might deal with
this problem.
The Ovid database version as listed on our library website gives the
following information :Copyright (c) 2000-2005 Ovid Technologies, Inc.
Version: rel10.2.0, SourceID 1.11354.1.65".
Thank you very much in advance,

Hi Johan
Have you already tried to use the 'Recover' tool? This functionality recovers records from the damaged library and puts them into a new library. I also use this functionality to open libraries made in a higher version, than the version in which I want to open them.
Choose Tools/Recover bibliography.
Success!

Hi,
I faced the same problem, even in the same plateform (Window XP) When I
tried to import the RIS format using PubMed filter, all the Primary Title
clump together in one field.
When I tried to open/convert the .ris file exclusively, there is not
"Ris"
format or *.* in the dialogue box.
So I have to copy and paste the references one by one. Still new to
RM11, hopefully this problem will improve after editing the import
filter (*.cap) Not much problem in output style, which I have better
control of the *.os file.

I have not used the recover tool. I can't find it in RefMan 11, unless you mean the rebuild function. Is dat vanwege vertaling van de nederlandse versie?
I have downloaded the current Endnote 9 demo, and used RIS format export from Endnote and RIS format import into Refman 11. Seems to work, mostly. Not sure whether the export/import generates errors, or whether mistakes in the original Endnote file were present. I really didn't have time (preparing a grant) to troubleshoot this kind of thing. Another work-around I used is just getting the references needed from PubMed, and forget about things like more than 2 initials, diacriticals, umlauts, etc.
A number of Dutch authored papers in the stroke literature had "errors" (IMHO). As clarification, many Dutch have more than 2 initials, and the prefixes used with many names ("de", "van", "van der", etc) are (in Dutch) traditionally not used for alphabetizing. Thus, "Willem Jacob Johannes Maria van der Veen"
becomes "Veen, WJJM, van der" in Dutch telephone books, or "Veen, WJ van der", but PubMed makes it "van der Veen, WJ".
I really, really think, that ISI should unify the software format or provide "translators", software that can read and write in both endnote and refman formats. That, and the automatic generation of synonyms, so that if the download provides full first names, a synonym with initials is generated.
Further suggestions to ISI: Do some real good research in what people are missing in the current versions of the software.
Groetjes,
Han

Hello,
I had to import citations from many different journals and over time I
learned that what worked best was to set up my own filter template tags.
The RefMan 9 and later RM 11 templates for specific journals never
worked well. For whatever reason they seemed to be chronically out of
sync with the 'real world.'
Essentially I took all the citations as made available at source as
plain text files and converted the tags to my own tags through a Search
and Replace operation after a second transfer of the text to Word, and
then back to 'text only'.
For example, if one source gave Author as 'AUTH:', I converted this to
the 'AU:' of my tested-by-fire template. I did the same for every other
field. The alternative was to fuss endlessly over each separate journal
format.
When finding abstracts at SpringerLink I still copy the citation with
abstract into a text file and then cut-and-paste manually. This saves a
lot of time and filters out many errors that had inevitably bedevilled
my 'time-saving' downloads straight to RM.
This of course works most economically when dealing with a large number
of citations.
Hope this helps..

I too have found problems importing Text Files using OVID filters. They
used to work, the one that I used was OVID ONLINE(OVID).CAP but I can
only get this to work with MEDLINE imports these days. We have students
who do not have access to RefMan from their own PC and so cannot use
direct links into RefMan.
I raised this with OVID and AdeptScience - the UK distributor of
Reference Manager (who have been most helpful). Adept provided me with
the following information from Research Soft.
"There are several variations of the OVID data that can be downloaded.
If the user has access to a machine but cannot direct export to
Reference Manager, they can still choose direct export and save the
resulting text file. This works with the OVIDWEB.cap filter.
If the user chooses the Reprint format, then they need to download and
save the text file and choose the OVID REPRINT FJ or AJ filters (Full
Journal/Abbreviated Journal). These files are formatted to handle the
reprint format.
If they select the long tagged version of the data output (where the
word Authors is used instead of AU - ) then they need to use the OVID
ONLINE OVID filter which has the long tags.
OVID's tag formats don't vary much from database to database, what does
vary is the format of the source line. We update source lines as users
complain about the data not parsing correctly. Since most of our issues
surround the Direct export functionality, we haven't made many changes
to the OVID Reprint or OVID Online filters lately. Source lines do vary
from the Reprint and Online Versions and the Direct Export versions from
time to time.
I would recommend that any user that is having to download a file and
then import it, use the OVID Reprint format. It has cleaner tags and is
a bit easier for us to keep track of."

I am using RefMan9.
An import filter usually matches with the output format of a specific
database. There is an import filter known as
Ovid(BRS/COLLEAGUE)PSYCINFO.cap which may work for you. Otherwise try a
few other similarly named filters. If none works, you can view and edit
an import filter within RefMan. They live in Import under Reference
Manager x.
Inspection of an example of the text information of a journal paper
retreived from Ovid's PsycInfo database will give a clue as to how much
deviation it is from what has been defined in the import filter. It
might require only minor changes.
A number of reference types that you mentioned belong to an output style
which is journal-specific or professional body-specific like American
Psychological Association 4th ed.os. They usually live in a folder named
Style to be used for formatting your in-text citation and references
list suitable for submission to a journal. You do not need to change any
of them.

To all:
I have spent months and dollars to try to get a smooth transition
from EndNote 6 to RefMan11. I have 5,000+ records. The
non-editable automated mapping drops parentheses and some hyphens in the
author fields, and some information in the pages field(s) if you have
more than simple numbers in it. I have not proofed other fields as
those two are significant enough to turn me off to the process, and to
drop RefMan again! Even though I would REALLY like to be able to use
its Web Publisher feature!
