Dear all,
Hi; I'm new to Ref Man, and apologise if the questions I'm
asking are all very old ones, but I've not been able to find
answers in the manual or anywhere else. I've got several
questions on different topics, so I'll send them separately
in case they branch out into different threads.
There are things I'd like to do with the display and
printing of the abbreviated reference list; does anybody
know if these are possible?:
1. Change the number of authors (primary) displayed in the
list.
2. Display the periodical, but in (standard) abbreviated
form.
3. Change the width of some columns, AND have this retained
upon printing.
Printing the abb.ref.list I find very useful, and could
put together an output style with the required info, but
the problem there is that I need to include the title,
but not the full title as it's often too long - having
the title cut off (as when you print the abbreviated ref
list) is actually very handy, but I can't see any way to
do something similar in an output style - any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff
Can you not just amend the output style to print the abbreviated title? ie
in the title properties, likewise the number of authors, etc?
Regards,
another Geoff

Dear Jeff,
As far as I know, RefMan will ONLY allow you to display the first author.
Which means they really ought to change the "Authors" label to "First
Author"! It scares the beejeezus out of people who think the label is
accurate.
As for the periodical, the only thing I know to do--and this is definitely a
kluge--is to use the Term Dictionary to change all occurrences of the full
journal name to the abbreviated form in the database. Note that this does
not screw up output styles that require the full name--not as long as the
abbreviated form is linked to the full form in the Term Dictionary. But the
display seems to pick up what is showing in the individual entry.
Now, I don't know about everyone else, but I wound up having to make sure I
had the abbreviated form in the Term Dictionary both with and without
periods. (I came up with a fast way to do this AFTER doing most of it the
journal-by-journal way!) I would pick the version that imports most
frequently--in my case, no periods. (It's also cleaner to look at.)
This is especially important if you want to sort things by journal name
(which we do when doing a library run, for instance): AIDS Educ Prev comes
before AIDS Educ.Prev. comes before AIDS Education & Prevention comes before
AIDS Education and Prevention in a simple ASCII sort.
Only ways I know to truncate the article title would be to export your list
in tab-delimited format and dump it into a Word table with set column widths
(you can jack with the right text margin by moving it into the boundaries of
the next cell or beyond--the part outside the cell won't actually print) or
into an Excel spreadsheet--probably the latter--and print it from there.
Anyone else have any bright ideas?
Cheers,
