When exporting from Reference Update 5.20 to Reference Manager 9.5 under
Windows 98 SE the process frequently halts and displays the message
"Internal Application Error." I have reinstalled RU, RM and the export
plug-in, in that order, to no avail. The support staff at RIS has not been
able to help me correct this problem. I wonder if anyone else has
encountered this problem.
Thanks.

Howdy Philip:
Greetings from south Texas - I have encountered this problem over a
substantial period of time and regularly. I have never obtained any
resolution of the difficulty from any source. However, the good news is if
you simply try the operation again, immediately following the error
message, it completes every time; at least for me. If it doesn't, then try
it again - I've never had to accomplish more than two attempts to get the
export successfully completed. I use the exact same software as you - RU
5.20 and RM 9.5 but under Win 2000 (I previously used Win 98 SE and Win ME
and this same thing happened under each operating system and the above
suggestion always worked with these operating systems as well).
I hope this information will provide you with, at least, some sense of
relief if not resolution. Take care Amigo.

Hi, Mike-
Thanks for the above. What I have discovered is that if you export after
retrieving marked files, then unmark the files that have already exported
and try again it works fine. But shouldn't RIS know something about the
problem, instead of being clueless as they are?

The problem is a bit more complicated, I think. I don't think RIS
any longer has control over RU--RU has been taken over by ISI
(which of course now owns RIS). ISI started Current Contents, but
couldn't seem to compete with RU and so solved the problem of
competition by buying RIS and RU along with it. (I much preferred
RU to any of ISI's competing products, and have still not seen a
Current Contents product that I like as much as RU). ISI
seemingly has no real interest in RU--it sells the product since
people still want to buy it, but is not upgrading the program and is
not supplying it with the newest journals. The obvious (to me)
intent is to get people to buy CC, and when enough do, then RU
will disappear. Given that (apparent) state of affairs, ISI has no real
interest in fixing any problems with RU and RIS can't fix the
problems because it has no mandate over RU. I clearly regret that
situation and RIS at least should at least alert users to the
problems and work arounds, but they may be under some
restrictions on doing that.

I do exactly the same thing, and it always works, if not the second timne then
the third time when I try.

I completely agree with Gray. It is therefore with great regret that I
have to admit to having changed to a CC product, CCC on-line, or whatever
they call it. The reasons are purely financial. RefUpdate would cost us
(3 investigators, 1 technician and 1 secretary) over $700 or 800/year. The
CCC product is free to us since Weill Med College has a site
subscription. CCC largely duplicates RU, but is far less flexible due to
its (poor) design as a web product.

When you re-export do you invoke Clear or Append? How do you avoid
duplicate entries?
