Dear All,
I am writing a paper and have included sections of text
from my PhD thesis, which have included references (RM
9.5). In the preparation of the paper I have deleted each reference then
re-inserted the citation in turn, direct from RM in order to eventually
construct the bibliography. However, when I ask it to construct the
bibliography it says it can't find a 'selected' citation (Error code
7401). I have been through them all meticulously to make sure they are
unformatted and correctly linked, and they seem to be. When I use the
tools to find unlinked citations I get the error message: WORD API Error
ID 5022. Can anyone shed any light on this and enable me to generate my
bibliography? Many thanks Carol Taylor

If you are using 9.5, have you tried reverting to original text and then scanning and linking to your database? It is sometimes easier to spot the problem (and click IGNORE on the offending reference(s)) when the citations are not just unformatted but reverted to text. Once I locate the problem, I usually chunk that paragraph or sentence out of the document and work with it in an isolated area until I've fixed things. Then I paste it back in.

Yes, Carol, I think that you must revert to original text before
deleting references and put the new references in and then generate the
bibliography again. Sometimes, I have to do this several times before it
is final. Save your file along the way! (as if I have to tell you this).

Huge thanks for these suggestions. I have just bought a new computer and
it will take me a week to get fully set up but as soon as I do, I will
put your advice into action. A million thanks

For what it's worth, I have had the same problem, and sometimes neither
reverting to original text nor unlinking all Word fields worked. My
solution was to reassembled the document one page at a time, geneating
bibliography (and saving!) until I found an offensive section. The sure
firre soltuoon was to save that section as pure text and re-insert it
into the new document. If there wasn't a lot of formatting, tables or
graphics in a document, one could do the latter to start.
I guess it's "comforting" that others have similar problems -- maybe RIS
will solve such problems before adding more "features." These error
message such allow us to pinpoint the offensive location.

Richard,
Glad to hear that other users are getting the same sort of problem as
us,
i.e. bad citations in Word docs. We haven't worked out why this happens
but
when it does it can be a real nuisance to solve. In the end we deleted
and
re-cited and this seemed to cure things. I have a suspicion that it may
be
linked to Word docs that were being used with RM9.5 that were then being
used with RM11, as problems started after upgrade to RM11 (which, in
hindsight, I regret doing due to RM11's lack of reliability but was
forced
upon us due to getting a working link to PubMed).
Cheers,
Rich.
