how to cite like "Fisher (1973) argues ..."
Author: Johannes Buehler    Posted: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 19:14:36 -0500

Hi,
does anyone know how to cite in the Reference Manager v10 if the author's
name occurs naturally in a sentence and the date of the reference follows in
brackets without repetition of the surname like:

"Fisher (1973) argues ..."

instead of "(Fisher 1973) argues ..."

thanks for any hints

Johannes Buehler

Johannes Buehler want to know "how to cite in the Reference Manager v10 if
the author's name occurs naturally in a sentence and the date of the
reference follows in brackets without repetition of the surname like:
"Fisher (1973) argues ..." "

This sort of thing is accomplished using "switches" which allow you to add
to or suppress certain information in the text while including something in
the reference list. You include these switches either after the identifying
text or after the "/id" if you've used CWYW.

/pt preceding text; enclose text in quotation marks; include any spaces
you want to appear INSIDE the quotation marks! {NBC 2004 /pt"See for
example the infamous Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake halftime show at
Superbowl XXXVIII, "} yields

(See for example the infamous Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake halftime show
at Superbowl XXXVIII, NBC 2004.)

/ft following text; enclose text in quotation marks; include any spaces
you want to appear INSIDE the quotation marks! (RIS 2001 /ft " p. 408"}
yields

(RIS 2001 p. 408)

/d show the date only; suppress the author names. "Fisher {Fisher 1993
/d} points out" yields

Fisher (1993) points out

/h hide the citation completely in the text but include it in reference
list. This one is ignored for numeric citations and overrides all other
switches. (I'm not sure why this one would be used except possibly in
tables???

You can combine /pt, /ft, and /d, although the manual does not show you how.
My experimentation shows that spaces between each switch work, and you have
to be careful about having semicolons in your preceding or following text.
Example:

Ajzen {Ajzen, 1991 AJZEN1991THEORY /id /d} postulates...

DASH, while tracking adolescent sexual behavior {Centers for Disease
Control, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health
Promotion, Division of Adolescent and School Health [DASH], 1995 CDC1995JSH
/id /d /pt "see, for example, "} ...

Published copyright dates are not necessarily accurate; publishers routinely
"postdate" all textbooks by at least a year, as Bartholomew {Bartholomew,
2000 BARTHOLOMEW2000BK /id /d /ft ", postdated to 2001"} shows.

yields

Ajzen (1991) postulates...

DASH, while tracking adolescent sexual behavior (see, for example, 1995) ...

Published copyright dates are not necessarily accurate; publishers routinely
"postdate" all textbooks by at least a year, as Bartholomew (2000, postdated
to 2001) shows.

I have NOT been able to make these work with CWYW "insert citation" when
they are electronic citations; I think there's a bug caused by using what is
actually the publication date field for the "access date", which is
required...

Anyone else?

You can do this easily. Begin your sentence with "Fisher " followed by your
refman code. Move your cursor into the code anywhere, and click on Edit
Citation (several ways to do this - right click on code, select "edit
citation" - or click on Tools, Reference Manager, Edit Citation - or click
on the Edit Citation icon on your toolbar). Select the checkbox that says
"Exclude author."

There you go.

Product Reviews

"Overall, Reference Manager is an excellent citation manager. It is simple enough to be used out of the box and not too intimidating for a new user. Equally, though, it contains enough powerful features and customisation to satisfy advanced users."
Information World Review

"It's highly recommended for anyone needing a powerful reference tool."
