Move keywords to another field
Author: Peter Malling    Posted: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 16:35:00 -0800

How do I move the keywords to another field, for all records in my
database? I would like to use the keyword field for my own tags.
Peter

Hi Peter.

I would suggest that you export your RM database in RIS-format. Then edit the RIS import filter in such a way that all keywords (tag label ¶KW··-·) are directed to your chosen field (for example User Def 1). Then import the references from the RIS-formatted file into a new RM database through the edited RIS import filter and all keywords will turn up in the User Def 1 field.

Note, however, that the User Def fields 1-5 are not indexed. Thus you will not be able to approach these keywords through the Term Manager.

Best wishes

This change can be made by editing the import filter that is used during
the import of the text file generated from your source database (eg
Medline).

In Reference Manager:

File - Import Text - Edit Filter -

Identify the appropriate Tag Label you want to change;

Click on the Destination Field, and select a new destination.

Open a database in Ref Mgr, import using the filter you just edited.

Hi,

This is how I did it (I am using version 10).

First, export citations to txt file

Reference / Export /

Specify the output txt file name
Choose RIS as your ourput format
Choose what you want to export under / References Options

Second, edit the txt file

Open the txt file that you just exported to
Edit / Replace
Find KW
Replace with the name for the field you want to move to
I replace KW with L4
I don't know where to find the field name. My quick trick is to export
one citation and check the field name.
Third, import the modifed txt to database

Reference / Import text files
Specify database name
Choose RIS as filter
Other steps are self-explanatory

If you want to keep the information in the new field, make sure that
field is checked (for all the reference types in the txt file) before
importing
This is how: Tool / Field and Type edit, the new field should be checked
with "I"

Thanks a lot, Al!
This sounds interesting, indeed! Does this mean that I can actually make RM move the contents of the keyword field to another field, every time I copy a record from an online database, such as Web of Science? (I do this either directly through RM's search-function in external databases (F4), or by downloading the info via the web search interface on Web of Science or PsycInfo.

Also thanks to Niels and Woei-Nan.Bair for your replies, which were directly related to my actual question on the batch process of moving the field for all my existing records.

Peter.
