I have several large databases (~5000 refs) and am wishing to create
synonyms so that differing journal titles/abbreviations are recognised
as one journal. Eg Br Jnl Ca is the same as British Journal of Cancer - in
terms of duplicate checking and retrievals. Does anyone have a moment to
spare to let me know how this can be done? Thanks in advance
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
The short answer is to download the list that's already been made. Last
April, Cindy Gregory posted this:
I realize this is probably too late, but for what its worth, there is a
periodical synonym dictionary created for Ref Man 8.x that includes only
index medicus journals (still may be too large for your needs). It can be
downloaded from
http://www.researchsoftware.nl/cgi-bin/forum/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&categ
ory=5&BypassCookie=true (which is a bulletin board run by DISC - other
helpful RM stuff there) I used it for ours and it works great. The
instructions are a bit sketchy, but basically you download their database
which is called "synonyms.rmx" -- it is an empty database with the synonyms
set up. Then copy your references into it. good luck. sorry if this is
too late.

.....................
The list is the complete list of journals indexed in Medline--I believe as
of 1998--and their official _Index Medicus_ abbreviations.
Once you've loaded it, use F5 (term manager) to go in and add whatever
additional synonyms you need; for instance, Br Jnl Ca is =not= the official
NLM abbreviation of the British Journal of Cancer: that's Br J Cancer. Be
=very= careful that non-standard abbreviations really do refer to the
journal you think they do. There are journal names out there that are
amazingly similar, even identical; in the latter case, they are usually
published in different countries.
Because of the length of the list, you may want to edit it. For instance, I
took out all the veterinary journals and those in Chinese and other
languages I sincerely doubted would often be used.
Cheers,
Karyn Popham
Trusting you're using RefMan 8.x or 9.x, for which I know this works

I do believe that is one of the strengths of Term Manager (hit F5 key and
read the help).
The interface is somewhat awkward in RM 9, but I think it got better in RM
10 (I haven't received my copy yet).

I agree with what Karyn said below. It's a perhaps unintended consequence
of the new coding in RM10. The advantage of the new way is that a
manuscript becomes a travveling database, and thus should make it easier to
interchange infomation between people working on the same manuscript. BUT,
as I pointed out during the beta cycle, it will require some kind of script
to read the information from the manuscript into a database (and I am not
qualified to write that).

I have an error on one of my Journal titles. I need to correct that error in
Term Manager. Can someone tell me how I can do that.

Hi!
Open the RefMan in Read-Write Exclusive mode; open term manager:
tools/term manager/activate/keywords; right mouse click on the keyword
you want remove,
choose: purge. Then the list of terms offer to you alphaberically any
keyword that are not any more used in your database :)
