Sharing Violation on Output Style
Author: Becky Skidmore    Posted: Thur, 18 Aug 2005 14:10:00 -0800
Hello:

We are getting this error more often.

"A sharing violation occurred while accessing H:\Reference Manager\Network\Program\Styles\Vancouver-new.os"

Our use of RM has increased significantly in the last few months due to growth in our organization. Often you can just click the error away but sometimes it continues until another user exits the software.

I've had some discussions with RM Tech Support in the past but we've never really found the source of the problem. Is anyone else experiencing it?

We use RM9.5 on the network - just about to upgrade to RM11.

Thanks for your help.

I have had this problem when I leave the output style editing window open.
I like to do that if I am still working on the style - tweaking it, if you will. I have found that if I minimize the window without closing it, I won't get this message and the style is still "open" for me to work on.

Not sure if this is the problem you're describing, but if it is, this solution works for me.

Thanks, Jeanie. I don't think this is the case for me as I do any editing on a local copy of the output style before copying up to the network. I think it is more likely some sort of network collision that is happening, possibly because when we get the error, we may have have max'd out on the # of simultaneous users. The problem is likely that under the General tab for options, I have set most users to have their output style set to read-only for the exact same output style. I am experimenting with creating copies of this style for different sets of users (using variations of the same name) which I will overwrite whenever I modify the core style used by our organization.

Product Reviews

"Overall, Reference Manager is an excellent citation manager. It is simple enough to be used out of the box and not too intimidating for a new user. Equally, though, it contains enough powerful features and customisation to satisfy advanced users."
Information World Review
