Using Refviz via RM11
Author: Peter Malling    Posted: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 14:25:00 -0800

I've downloaded the trial of Refviz 2.0, the reference visualization
tool. It can then be accessed through the menu item Data Visualization
in RM11, which should give me a view of how the references in my RM
database are connected. I tried it on a database with 3-400 references,
what happens is this:
- A bar going from 0 to 100% is showing that it is importing the
references, takes about 8 seconds.
- Splash-screen for Refviz, where it says Trial version, and I can
choose between Register and Purchase, after a few seconds these buttons
are diabled, and it continues
- A dialogue box says: "Note: Some references may be filtered at import
if they contain insufficient information (such as an incomplete
reference missing the title).
- Another bar ("importing references") showing some progress is
displayed for just 1-2 seconds
- Dialogue box: "Not able to create View. No references were imported."
- RefViz is running, but not really, as it contains nothing, the menus
can't be selected, just everything on the screen is disabled, except the
minimize/maximize/close buttons in the right corner. When I click the
"close" button, RefViz closes. So it doesn't actually hang. But it can't
be used.

The references in the database are just ordinary things, mostly
downloaded from Web of Science.
I also tried to mark some of the records in RM (as I wondered if only
the marked records were sent to RefViz), but this had no effect.

Do anybody have an idea how I get my RM database visualized?

Thanks?

/Peter.

Peter:

By default, RefViz will not import references that do not contain an
abstract, or are lacking a title. Could it be that the references that
you were sending over to RefViz did not contain abstracts? This setting
can be changed in RefViz by going to the main menu and selecting Edit ->
Preferences, then clicking on the "View Creation" tab. Deselect the
option to "Exclude references with no Abstract" option, and click on the
"OK" button. Try to send the references after changing this setting.

Since RefViz bases it's analysis on the text contained in the title and
abstract fields, if the references lack abstracts, there is little
vocabulary on which to do the analysis. Consequently, the default is
set to exclude references that are missing abstracts.

Product Reviews

"Overall, Reference Manager is an excellent citation manager. It is simple enough to be used out of the box and not too intimidating for a new user. Equally, though, it contains enough powerful features and customisation to satisfy advanced users."
Information World Review
