Subject: Pro-cite records on the Web
Hello! We're trying to find libraries that have put records created
using Pro-cite into a format searchable on the Internet. (We have a
database of about 20,000 records.)
My apologies if this is a "FAQ" --- I'm new to the list and am trying
to find out what (if any) additional software we'll need in time for
a grant proposal due soon. The people at RIS didn't have any
specifics, and suggested a posting to the group.
THANKS!

I'm discouraged to see that RIS doesn't have a slicker approach to
putting citations on the WEB. I guess the "internet enabler" they
talk about on their web page is just a feature for "saving
as...html". Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
The approach I'm planning to use is to exported formatted citations
to an Access database and then use MS Internet Information Server to
query that database and return results to a web page. We have a
fellow here (at the Foley Library) who's done that successfully for a
local client of the library (the "Hanford Project"), and it works
well.

We are in the same situation and have received the same response. We
also want to support a searchable pro-cite database on the Web and
make it part of a grant request.
If you find any information please share/post on the listserv.

I had hoped there might be more responses to this query. I have a home
page (http://www.wam.umd.edu/~wsp/devotion) featuring several
bibliographical lists that were created with ProCite, and I would very
much like to know whether it is going to be possible to mount a searchable
ProCite database on the Web in the future. I realize there are other ways
of doing that now, but they seem to require serious programming skills.

Just a note, Bill's page is at http://www.wam.umd.edu/~wsp/devotion.htm
We at Northwestern are also interested in this, and may be mounting
something soon.

Thanks to Brian Neilson for giving the correct version of my home page's
URL.
I am appending a message I sent this afternoon, on the assumption that it
may be of general interest.

Dear David,
Thanks very much for your note. Let me explain my situation. I am an
academic (professor of English at the University of Maryland) and have
done a good deal of bibliographical work. I have been using ProCite
regularly for a number of years and in fact once reviewed it in _Papers of
the Bibliographical Society of America_ (of which I was then the editor).
I am excited about the scholarly possibilities of the Web, and in
particular I am fascinated by the prospect of producing searchable
bibliographies. Because I am not a programmer, I do not feel ready to face
the complexities of Java or CGI; what I want is a relatively simple
program that will enable me to mount a bibliographical database on the
Web.
At the moment I have two home pages devoted to modern fine printing
(http://www.wam.umd.edu/~wsp/home.htm) and English devotional writers of
the seventeenth century (http://www.wam.umd.edu/~wsp/devotion.htm)
respectively. Both make use of long bibliographical checklists originally
compiled in ProCite but converted into ordinary text/HTML format.
I see this as only a temporary measure, because obviously what I want to
do is to offer access to the databases themselves.
I suppose what I am really longing for is a slightly simplified, read-only
version of ProCite. Since it would be read-only, there would be no need to
allow access to the record screen, but I would want people to do searches
and produce bibliographies in a variety of formats based upon those
searches, much as one can do in ProCite. The bibliographies generated on
the screen could then be downloaded or printed by the browser.
How all this would interact with the Web browser or how it would be
handled on the University of Maryland's file server is well beyond my
technical expertise. But I cannot believe that I am only the only person
who longs for this kind of product. I gather that various Web-compatible
database programs are about to be made available, but I know from
experience in dealing with more generic programs (such as Lotus Approach)
that -- although they have many attractive features -- they just do not
have the sophisticated formatting capabilities of ProCite.
ProCite is a superb bibliographical database program (I use it every day
in my professional activities), and if you folks were to create a
read-only version for the Web, it would be an extraordinarily powerful
tool for disseminating information.
Please let me know if I have not been specific enough or if I can answer
any questions.
Regards,
Bill Peterson

Hello, Brian. Almost all of the really valuable responses (8 of 9) to my
question
were posted to me and not the group. If you would like me to forward copies
of these to you, please send a message. As it turns out, we will
probably not have time to mess with most of the suggestions,
especially those that require any kind of programming skill. We did
confirm that the Web software we were already considering (BestWeb
Pro, see www.bestseller.com) will work once we manage to export the
ProCite files into an ODBC (open data-base connectivity)-compliant
format. Have found a program which theoretically will let us do that
(Data Magician, fax 519-836-2623) for $300. Since BestWeb Pro sells
for only $350, I'm reasonably confident we'll be able to do this on a
small grant. Unfortunately, since the grant proposals are due in 2
weeks, I can't check out all the other options.
Best of luck to you!

Bill: Your note to Kochalko at RIS was indeed interesting. We have
nothing to lose by impressing on RIS that there is a demand for this
type of product. If they don't listen, we need to find a vendor that
will. Thanks for the update.

I am also looking for a search on the internet for Procite databases. We
are currently using the 'find' command in Netscape. But that doesn't do the
kinds of searches we want. We want to be able to search the 'indexed'
bibliography. If anyone is using a search routine on the internet, please
let us know.
