Subject: ProCite 3.0 News?
Dear Pro-Cite Subscribers,
I do not wish to foment dissension here but has _anyone_ received official
notice from PBS regarding upgrades to ProCite 3.0 for Windows or
Biblio-Link II for Windows?
I like to consider myself a patient person but I am growing increasingly
impatient in the face of PBS's failure to let its users know how the work on
the upgrades is progressing and when we might reasonably expect to receive
them. Their failure to produce the upgrades themselves might be forgiven if
PBS would simply apologize for the delay and give us a firm date for receipt
of the upgrade and missing documentation for ProCite 3.0.
PBS was all too eager to advertise and accept payment for ProCite 3.0
before it was ready for release, then shipped a program beset with bugs
and demonstrating poor judgment in its design and documentation, and at
that shipped only half of the documentation, leaving us with the
expectation that the remaining Reference Manual would be shipped soon.
Months later, having paid for the upgrade to ProCite 3.0, I have still
received only have half of it and have seen one date after another for
release of the manual and upgrade pass by, and have yet to see anything
from PBS explaining the delay.
I have written to both Ken Raynor and Mary LaFountain in recent weeks
expressing my frustration over the delays, and particularly over the
lack of any notice explaining the delays, but have not received any
response from them. This is not meant as a criticism of them--when I
have requested help they have been there to offer it--but when I
complain about PBS's silence in the matter and am met with further
silence the irony is oppressive.
So, I repeat my question. Has _anyone_ heard _anything_ about upgrades
to either ProCite 3.o or Biblio-Link II for Windows, or seen any firm
information about an expected shipping date for the ProCite 3.0 Reference
Manual?
Thanks for listening,
Leon E. Zimlich

I am sorry to say this. In consultation with experts in this matter,
I was told that the upgrade version of ProCite is Reference Manager.
I am seriously considering this upgrade, if it can accept my old
DOS ProCite files.
(I'm selling this fish for the same price I bought it).
Luck to all,

Leon,
Rest assured that you are not alone. A lot of people share your
frustration. You are quite right that they should have been more
forthcoming with explanations and information. I think that mistake is
going to cost them customers in the long run. Other people are going to
take advantage of that for sure.
I did get version 3.0.2 finally, and must admit that it is an improvement
over 3.0, though now I have a different set of problems with inserting
citations that they haven't been able to help me with. I think they'll
probably get it right with 3.1, I hope, but when? That's the big
question. It may be too late by then, I'm afraid.
The latest date I heard for 3.1 + documentation was September (it used to
be late August). That probably means a few more months. We just don't
know. They aren't talking. I am definitely not able at this time to
recommend this product to anybody, and a lot of people are asking me at
the College, as well as outside colleagues, cause I seem to be one of the
few people using bibliographical software.
Anyway, no answers here, just more complaints.
Jon

I am glad that you brought this subject to the Procite Users group. Shoul all
of us send letters complaining about this lack of professionalisms of PBS, and
demand an already late response ?.
I will do it myself. I paid for a complete package and I don't have it yet.
Should they refund money or at least pay interest on the money they collected
before delivering the product ?.
It sounds like a cheap loan from the users, selling the product, use the money
and some months later deliver it. I don't think it is right.

I agree--ProCite for Windows has the potential to be a good program. My
primary complaint with PBS is its failure to communicate with its users,
particularly when it has yet to live up to its end of the upgrade agreement.
While ProCite for Windows in its present form is a disappointment I have no
interest in moving on to another program. ProCite will be improved over
time. But PBS could do much to repair its customer relations by simply
telling its users the truth about when it will send out the upgrade, by
not making promises it will inevitably break, and by making this effort
on its own without repeated requests from its users for information.
I understand that there can be delays in rewriting code for the upgrade,
and in rewriting the Reference Manual to reflect those changes, but there
is no excuse for PBS's public silence about what it is doing. That
silence is a breach of good will.

I was very keen to get 3.0 a year and more ago and offered several times
to help with the beta testing. Now I find myself beta testing the upgrade
I paid for.
I read an ad for Reference Manager a year ago and got the impression that
one would have to pay them to convert one's DOS ProCite databases.
I plan to hang in with ProCite because I think their Windows version will
end up a good program (unlike some other software that went through major
upgrades and died of hubris). I do wish they would get the reference
manual to us!
