Subject: Latest on WordPerfect support?

Has anyone heard anything recently about plans for Pro-Cite to
support WordPerfect in addition to Word? I'm supposed to be
receiving the upgrade to WordPerfect 7 for Win95 soon and I'm hoping
Pro-Cite is soon going to support it. I chose WordPerfect over
WordPro (I used to use AmiPro) because of the promised ProCite
support for WordPerfect, but that was a long time ago and I haven't
heard anything about it for quite a while.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael Siepmann

Dear ProCite users,

Due to the recent flurry of comments regarding support for
WordPerfect in ProCite, I thought it appropriate to post this brief
update.

We are currently adding support for WordPerfect to ProCite and will
release this as a no-charge upgrade to registered users. This is an
active development project and we will release the upgrade as soon as
possible. Please look for postings to this listserv, our Web site,
and mailings which will announce its availability.

Thanks for your continuing interest in ProCite! We look forward to
providing this valuable enhancement for all WordPerfect users.

Best regards,
Dave

Michael,

I call tech support periodically to ask about the module for WP 6.1, the answer
keeps on being "No".....

With Word having such a large share of the market and WordPerfect such
as small one, I am not surprised ProCite hasn't come up with the WP
module. They might have intended to, if and when they found time, after
ironing all the problems they had with ProCite 3.0, but it is obvious
that it is not a priority now. Further debugging Procite 3.1/3.2 is
probably a higher priority, or getting a 32bit version out. And I
suspect that the personpower at the company is not what it would take to
get all those things accomplished (nor could it be, if they're trying
not to lose money).

But, if you want to see the WP module, I suggest that you keep an eye
open as to what Niles and associates are up to (ie the EndNote people,
the competition.) As far as I can see they only have a Word module, so
.... On the other hand, with enough pressure from us they may turn this
(back) into a priority for one of the two companies, though I doubt it.

I used to worry about this too, but then about a year ago I changed to
Word and don't think I'm not going back.

MS Word, very good?

I'm only a beginner as far a MS Word is concerned but has anyone ever =
tried to search (or search and replace for that matter) for any of the =
symbols found on the symbol charts (barring ASCII characters)? Something =
very simple in WordPerfect but, correct me I am wrong, impossible in MS =
Word. Also, can you find (or find&replace) anything in headers and =
footers? Can you automate, let's say with macros, changes to the =
features (margins, vertical alignments, etc.) included in the sections? =
These are only a few of the things I can't do in MS Word in my short =
experience with the programme.

I apologise for the above if it's not directly relevant to this list but =
I changed to MS Word 7 partly because it was advertised as been as good =
or better as WordPerfect, partly because the new Pro-Cite for Windows =
supported the bibliographic function within Word and partly because =
supposedly it would integrate better with Windows95 than its rival =
WordPerfect.

I have used WordPerfect 5.1 for a very long time and I miss its =
versatility and powerfulness with macros. There was very little you =
could not automate. If WordPerfect 7 supports the same functions 5.1 did =
I will certainly try it out to compare it with Word 7. In which case the =
Pro-Cite's bibliographic function within WordPerfect will be a must.

Any comments?

Ton,

You have indeed discovered one of the (few, I would say) weak points of
Word 6/7. The ability to select the found string, or to place the
cursor before or after, all that is not possible. Most major codes can
be found though. Go to Format or Special at the bottom of the box. The
codes are very simple to insert manually (unlike in WP), so ^p is
paragraph character, ^t is tab, etc. One nice thing in Word is that you
can substitute something with the contents of the clipboard.

I still wouldn't go back to WP though. Word hasn't disappointed me in
many ways. You have caught one of the few.

Best, Jon

PS By the way Word 8 is coming out very soon. Totally revamped, I hear.

I do not know about ProCite's plans for supporting WordPerfect 7, but I
will put in a plug for WordPerfect. Corel is making a sincere effort to
support and promote WordPerfect after the horrible treatment by Novell.
The new WordPerfect is a bargain; it is very stable, and I still think that
it is easier to work with than Word, in spite of that program's gradual
improvement.

I have tried to use Word on several different occasions only to be
frustrated by what was for me an illogical menu structure, commands that
did not work in an intuitive fashion, and a pokey interface. I hope people
out there who had given up on WordPerfect will give it another try and that
ProCite will support it. EndNote (a competing bibliographic database)
already does. And IMHO, EndNote is easy to use and has better support than
ProCite.
