ProCite 5 on Windows XP

I have a new ProCite5 version since my workplace was upgrading our operating systems to Windows XP. I am going through hell trying to edit styles to include underlining. It simply will not save. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I have reinstalled the software, and tried another computer, but I suspect that the problem is the XP and ProCite are not compatible. The technicians here are recommending that I keep an old computer with Windows98, just to handle my ProCite databases, but that sounds a bit extreme.

Hi, Marcia! Last year we migrated (kicking and screaming) from Windows
Millenium to XP. Although we'd heard of problems with ProCite 5, so far
have not had any. Probably shouldn't have said that...

Hi Marcia,

For what it's worth, I have modified (and created) a number of styles while
using XP (home edition) with ProCite 5. I have not had any problem getting
my modifications to save (although I have not done any underlining).

Maria,

The problem might be that you do not have enough operating system rights
on your computer to save customization changes in your Procite program
directories. When four of our computers, running Win2000 or 98, were
replaced with XP, I encountered installation problems with many
programs, and with installing printers also. Bumping up my rights on the
machine (not the network) was the required medicine. I do not recall if
"power user" status was enough for the fix. "Machine administrator"
might have been required.

In any case, Procite 5 is now happily working on XP on my desktop, with
me logged in as regular network user, not as machine administrator.

If you cannot get an increase in your operating systems rights, you
might try copying the output files you need to customize to a directory
where you keep your data files, rather than the default location with
the program files. You will have to tell ProCite where to look for the
output files.

Dear Marcia,
Have been trying this too - see my call for help last week. While I am
having major problems modifying a Harvard and Turabian style, I did not have
a problem with underlining. It saved ok, and un-underlined as well.
Sometimes there is a slight delay before it edits e.g. when you look at the
example given. I have XP and Word 2003 so no problems at that end.

Regards, Cathal Coleman
