Subject: Experience with large Procite files?
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Folks:
I've been asked to contribute experience/advice on how to present a large
departmental library electronically which up until now has been on
hard-copy cards.
One option I suggested was the Procite/Ref Web poster route, since grad
students/faculty might also want to search from home or office.
Does anyone have any experience with 4,000 to 6,000 item procite files?
slow are they in:
a) Procite environment (with Pentium 400)
b) Ref Webposter (dedicated line--not modem-- and a solid server software

I have a database with about 7800 items in it which we serve
from an NT running Reference Web Poster. Response times are
perfectly satisfactory. You're welcome to look at our implementation.

We use a database that is 8,400 items on a Pentium 133 and speed has
never been a problem. We havn't loaded our Webposter yet though.

I am running ProCite 4.01 (under NT4) with a database now exceeding 52,000
records (incl. Abstracts which I have collected over 35 years) and the files
of this amount to 300MB. The machine is running with two processors
(266MHz) and 256 MB RAM. I get the impression that the amount of RAM is an
important feature in the speed of searching. A few thousand references
should not pose a speed problem. I have no experience with Ref Web
Poster.

I use two databases of about 4500 records, and they're fast. I use one of
them to demonstrate with, and the audience is usually impressed with the
speed of searching.
> b) Ref Webposter (dedicated line--not modem-- and a solid server software
Your problems here won't be with speed. RWP is quite quick to search.
HOWEVER, think very carefully. RWP is actually designed for Reference
Manager, another product from the RIS stable. RWP converts Procite
databases to RefMan, but there are some fields which do not map correctly.
I won't go into the details, as I presume you're not familiar with either
product. However, before making a purchase, get the help desk to set out
for you just how you can avoid problems.
A second problem is that you can't actually print off a list of references
from RWP: you have to do it screen by screen, or copy/paste each screen
to compile a list.
I really like Procite, but the current version of RWP is not mature. They
expect an upgrade early next year, I believe.

Dear Dr. Stanley:
Our largest Procite database is about 25,000 records. An in-house
search goes fairly fast; it does take somewhat longer on the RWP
database which is on the Internet. If you'd like to test it out
yourself, visit http://fire.lakenet.org
We did have lots of problems getting the largest database to run.
The smaller ones (1,000 to 4,000 records) loaded without any
problems. The big one (articles) kept crashing. If it happens to
you, re-index on the host computer, and then load into RWP.
