from procite to endnot
Author: Lise Sedrez    Posted: Fri, 14 May 2004 17:17:40 -0700
I am also giving up on procite. Does anyone know the easiest way to convert a document
with pro-cite references to Endnote? Or do I have to go one by one?

Thanks,

Lise

I wanted just to note, that Endnote is a product of the same company
producing also ProCite. Who may then guarantee that the company would not do
the same with Endnote (and any other products) as they did with Procite...?

I would unformat the citations, revert to original text, bring your database
into EndNote, then re-scan.

ProCite was developed in Ann Arbor, Michigan by a small independent company.
It was later bought by ISI/Thompson who was trying to limit competition, so
in that sense it is now a "product of" ISI. That is why ISI/Thompson now
owns 3 major players - 3rd one is Reference Manager.

Much as Netscape suffered after being bought by its competition, IE, so goes
ProCite.

Laurel,

Thanks for this. I haven't heard this story yet. It explains a lot!

I think Laurel's sequence here is not quite right. The Ann Arbor
developer of ProCite, PBS, was purchased by the owner of Reference
Manager, and the combined firm was later purchased by ISI which had also
acquired EndNote. The end result is the same of course.

Similarly, I think Netscape was actually purchased by AOL, which was
later merged with Time-Warner. I don't believe the Justice Department
could have allowed Microsoft to purchase the only competitor web browser
in the market. Note, however, that the end result may be much the same
as for ProCite. The ultimate parent company lacked interest in the
specifics of the product that differentiated it from weaker competitors.

Fact is, there is no guarantee and I voiced this exact sentiment to a person
from ISI-Thomson recently. I told them my concern wasn't just about poor
support for ProCite, I was fast losing confidence in the company. There was
lots of "we don't want you to feel that way;" but given the company's recent
track record, I don't think it is unreasonable to say that someday Endnote
or Reference Manager could become stepchildren like ProCite.

Hi

I know this is a dumb question, but, io you know if the original Ann Arbor
developer of ProCite prepared to develop a new generation product with the
kind of features that have been talked about in this forum?

Warm regards/gary
