Unable to search OCLC and other Hosts

I recently installed ProCite 5 on my home, dialup modem, PC and
I'm new to this list so I appreciate your advice to a novice.
I've taken the guided tour and everything is working OK, even the
OVid Trial server.

I've "tested hosts" on the internet server capabilites of many of
the hosts and got the message that they are OK but many result in
"error". Of particular concern to me is OCLC Firstsearch. I set
the "host properties" to include my username and password but I
still get the "error" on testing the host. I can use OCLC through
web access OK. What should I do to get it to work via ProCite?
I've sent a similar email to OCLC and hope for a response
tomorrow.

Also I can't get Cornell Univ. host to work. What should I do to
get this site to work? Is there a change in the configuration
file needed? Is there a place I can get a copy of the necessary
changes? Also does anyone have a configuration file for any
USEPA or USDOE servers or hosts?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Todd

Todd - In my experience, I think Procite is rather deceptive regarding its
potential on-line searching. Under "TOOLS->INTERNET" searching, you can use
the "host" selection to CATALOGS in libraries, but others aspects are a bit
of a "tease" -- in other words, you have to actually be subscribed to get
the benefit of online searching. Using the TOOLS->PUBMED SEARCH, anyone
with internet access can access via procite (or other modes of access).
Regarding OCLS, OVID, and other providers, you must be a subscriber and I
have found that I cannot directly access them, due to the manner in which my
library is set up! So I have to search through my library, then email or
download the search, then upload it into Procite. If you are part of a
university, check with your library and find out which databases
providers/databases are subscribed to. Have I utterly confused you -- or
perhaps am I confused myself - if I'm doing something wrong, let me
know!!!!? trisha

I had this same problem with FirstSearch. When the host would be tested it
would come back as working but would send an error message when a search was
attempted. Procite sent the following message and after making the changes,
it works again.

+++++++++++++
OCLC has changed their database names.
information is here:
http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/documentation/z3950/database.htm
for this database (World Cat)
http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/documentation/z3950/worldcat.htm

you will need to change the name of Worldcat MARC database.
The short name is now : OLUC
and the Database name is now : WorldCat After changing these settings, it
should work.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks,
Colin Gillies
