Dear Procite list members,
I am forwarding the following message from one of our members. This same
message was also recently posted on the BIBSOFT LIST. The ESB Forum web
page to which the posting refers is a LONG (96K, about 20 printed pages)
and DETAILED COMPARISON of the two products. Most useful.

Please, would you mind posting this message to the list?
I am travelling and not at home, thus (without re-suscribing) the LISTSERV
is duly rejecting it as from a non-member of the list.
Many thanks.

I've just checked this comparison table
(http://www.burioni.it/forum/ors-bfs.htm) made by Franscesco Dell'Orso, and
I must say I'm very impressed. This is very good work. It's a must to see.
Reading the table, Procite appears to be technically dominant compared to
EndNote in almost all aspects. Still, numerous features are still missing
from ProCite, and the comparison table shows clearly what are its strengths
and what can be improved. Three "Bravo" for Franscesco. 8-)
This said, how do people feel about RIS buying its competitor ? It seems to
me that the market of bibliographical software is now almost a monopoly...
Do you believe that this dominance will eventually be beneficial or
detrimental for users in the long run ?
My own feeling ? Well, there are now more than ever room for increased
standardization and integration (files, record, export, etc.), enhanced
technical capabilities (more money on R&D and
localization/internationalization of products), and improved technical
support (more staff). It creates great hopes. On the other hand, I still
have to be convinced that the lack of competition won't make the company the
rest on its laurels. I mean, we are still waiting the company to tackle
important issues and concerns that were raised long ago in the 3.x version,
were supposed to be solved in the 4.x version and now seem to be delayed up
to the we-do-not-know-when 5.x version. Last fall, we heard rumors about an
upcoming 5.0 version, but back then RIS would decline to give any
information, fearing "competition". Now that there's virtually no
competition anymore, will the (new) company be more proactive ? I can only
hope so. We'll see.
What about your feelings ?
Regards to all

I note that neither procite nor endnote have very highly developed data
validation, ie you can enter or import any old rubbish into most fields
without getting any sort of warning. .....unlike Papyrus....
