Well, it does appear that there is a user sub-culture to which the power
of Procite appeals despite its occasional idiosyncracies and apparently
the problems in new versions. Having been in the IBM world, I get the
impression there are often problems with dos versions of programs
designed for the MAC as was apparently the case with Procite. But might I
point out that being an ann arbor resident with no connection with PBS,
PBS is no Lotus or Microsoft. It's a little company and frankly its a
miracle it can survive given the software environment today. I do wish
that companies such as Procite and Alpha four which made great dos
programs would continue to upgrade them in dos, with the view they could
be run under future operating systems, and that is because the speed of
non-graphical programs will continue to be greater than windows versions
for some time to come even when true 32-bit programs are fully here. On
the other hand, I did volunteer to use a beta version, to be a
"beta-tester" and was informed PBS had all the testers they need.
Apparently, that may not be the case....I wonder by the way if some of
the problems people are having stem from overuse of the clipboard, which
as I understand it is a hog on windows resources, and can easily lead to
low resource levels and subsequent crashes.
PBS: Are you listening? I strongly feel that all Windows programs that
are likely to be used concurrently with another memory and resource
intensive application (such as Wordperfect for Windows) should have a
built-in utility that warns users when resources levels fall below a
certain point. Wordperfect allows users to click on help and discover
levels of both types of resources, which is more than program manager
does! And there are apparently TSR third party shareware apps that will
pop up and tell you, although I don't know where to get one. I'd like to
see PBS incorporate such a utility or offer it, as no one likes to crash.
As long as we have to use this poor excuse for an operating system
(and wait until we hear the excuses for Windows 95!), let's not blame the
small application companies, let's blame the behemoths!
