Since there's no immediate evidence (and I have called several times) that
PBS is going to re-do the code on ProCite/Mac into a PPC native version,
I've gone ahead and continued my use of ProCite 2.1 with my PowerPC
computers -- first a PowerMac 6100, and now, a PowerMac 9500. Especially
with SpeedDoubler installed (which increases the emulation efficiency), it
does just fine. My standard bibliography (base) has something like 9300
citations in it, with more being added all the time, and the speed doesn't
slacken on the PowerPC platform, even though the code isn't native.
I guess if you had REALLY nasty and complex searches, it could be onerous,
but about 98 percent of my searches are using the "QuickSearch" function,
and it takes, what, only five or six seconds to run through the nearly
10,000 records.
So I wouldn't worry much. On the other hand, I WILL be happy when a new
version (Mac-based) comes out -- some aspects of the interface remain sorry
dogs. But PBS certainly isn't adventurous. I use ProCite because it makes
transfering records to different database formats easy, and because
BiblioLinks II does work, even though it's pretty kludgy. (If you've
willing to run through five or six steps, it CAN export the records into
ProCite, with a minimum of mangling.) (On the other hand, there are lovers
of EndNote Plus and Pro out there...)
I'd say, go ahead.
