3.1.1 patch

I could not find the patch either that was announced to the list a couple
of days ago. The file does not exist anywhere in that server. What's the
scoop?

On a different topic: Has anyone had to deal with special characters (such
as letters with accents and umlauts) in PC3.x with Windows 95? They do
not alphabetize properly. When I had this problem with WIndows 3.1, I was
told to change the setting from "US English" to "International ENglish".
But Win 95 does not seem to have international English as a choice, but
rather Australian ENglish, British English, etc.

By the way, congratulations to PBS. I'm quite satisfied with ProCite for
Windows as of late. Also I like the idea of receiving updates and patches
by ftp or the Web (just don't announce them before they're there).

I had no problem to find, download and install 3.1.1 patch by
following PBS instructions.

I downloaded it with no trouble. It fixed the ghost record problem. I
haven't explored much further to see if any other changes were made.

I actually like the ftp-mode of software updating. It's easier and
cheaper than waiting for a disk. I'm a bit worried about the virus
problem. Be sure you scan the zip self-extracting exe file before you
invoke it. I'm not saying that PBS didn't check their patch, but it's a
good habit to get into as the ftp upgrade route becomes more popular.

(PS. I did get an infected disk from a reputable statistical utility
software company; so now I check everything.)

I also tried to get the patch from the ftp site. Couldn't get into the
"Windows ProCite 3.1" subdirectory. Had it listed on the screen but couldn't
get any further. Is the patch available on the PBS Web site?

There is something funny about that address I guess. I finally got
through using Netscape (ftp://ftp.pbsinc.com), whereas my Windows 95
Norton Navigator could not "see" the directories or files past the Windows
subdirectory. But the patch is there, somehow. I obtained it and ran it
and it works fine. Congratulations to PBS. There are still a few
improvements that I wish they had incorporated into this version, but it
is stable and it seems to do what it promises, so I'm quite happy. I feel
I can recommend it to my friends now. Good luck.

Thanks to those folks who responded to my plea for help in getting 3.1.1
from the PBS ftp site. While I was not able to penetrate the PBS directory
structure using plain vanilla ftp, I WAS able to get through using Netscape.
I've got the update, have installed it, and all is well.

Thanks to you all.

Is there some other way for people still in the dark ages to get the
patch? Our system cannot penetrate the PBS directory structure either
and we don't have Netscape.

ProCite 3.1.1 Patch
This is clarification on how to access
the ProCite for Windows 3.1.1 Patch:

To install the 3.1.1 patch you must have the full
version of ProCite 3.1 currently installed. Download
the patch installation from:

ftp.pbsinc.com/pub/vendor/pbsinc

Both the patch installation program PC311.EXE and
a READ1ST.TXT text file are in the directory:

Windows ProCite 3.1/Ver 311 Update

If your software has trouble reading this directory
(because of the spaces in the directory name),
enclose the pathname with double quotes:

"Windows ProCite 3.1/Ver 311 Update"

Please note that directories on this FTP server are
case sensitive.

Maybe - try putting the directory in quotes like: cd "Windows ProCite 3.1"
and make sure you include the spaces and utilize upper- and lower-case.
This worked for me on our VAXen running VMS. I also recommend removing
the spaces from filenames when FTPing them as some systems don't handle
them too well at the local end. However, the best thing would be if
the FTP site maintainer would place underscores in place of the spaces
for directories and filenames - not a complaint, just a suggestion.

May your attempt be successful. - g^2

I've been trying for a while now to access the PBS FTP site (even using
Netscape) with no luck. We've also used a WWW search engine to find it,
with no joy. Others have managed - any ideas why we haven't?
