I did try to find how to enter this into the short or long form, and also
to search the archives to see if anyone else had asked this question ...
so:
How does one indicate a special issue of a journal that has a title and
editor? For example, the one I am currently trying to enter into procite
is the Special issue of SAQ, Peter Hitchcock, Editor, entitled
"Bakhtin/'Bakhtin': Studies in the Archive and Beyond." Of course the
title of the journal is SAQ (South Atlantic Quarterly), and I know where
to enter the date, volume, etc. But where to put the title of the special
issue?
I am a rank novice, so please take this into account when responding.
Otherwise I may have to re-post, no doubt to the irritation of the list!
Also, I have not found in the manual an explanation for all the fields in
each of the workforms. Most are self-explanatory, but for a new user like
me, others are not. For example, what is "analytic" author vs. a
"monographic" author. I think the analytic is the editor of an anthology?
and the "monographic" the author of an essay or chpt in the book?
But this is not the only problem. It would be nice to have a description
of terms in general. Does this exist somewhere?

Close, but it's the other way around (sort of)! These are "library-ese"
terms. A "monographic" author (or title) applies to the work as a whole,
i.e. to the whole book ("monograph") or entire journal, or conference
proceeding, etc. The "analytic" author(s) or title applies to a part of
the work, e.g. the author or title of a chapter in a book, or an article
in a journal, or a paper in a conference. It doesn't matter whether they
are editors or not, in terms of being "monographic" vs "analytic", what
matters is whether it applies to the work as a whole or a part of the
work. (hope this makes sense)
Good luck!

I think the way in which the title of the special issue is entered depends on how
you will be using the bibliographic reference. I have prepared a couple of dozen
reference list for different journals, and they all want something different. The
best way for me is to enter the title of the journal, followed by a semicolon,
then the name of the special issue. Or you can enter the journal name followed by
the special issue in parentheses. If you use journal long form, enter the
editor's name in field 07 - Author, Monographic. You can always edit the
reference list later to fit the publishers' requirements.

If you are using ProCite 4.0, chapter 8 of the manual has very good descriptions
of each field, explanations of the best way to use each, and definitions of the
terminology used.

Mary Jo,
I use ProCite for a computerized library catalog, and we employ APA (Am. Psych.
Assn.) style for our references. In the situation you're describing, I use the
Journals, Short form and put the title of the issue in the Article Title field,
followed by the words "[Issue title]" in brackets as shown. I don't bother with
putting the editor in the record; maybe the Journals, Long form will allow you to
do that.
Hope this helps.

Yes, but by some reason the Journals-Long form is not defined for a
majority of output styles in my working field.....

Hi Mary Jo,
I'm a librarian (I'm assuming Margaret Harris is, too -- she
gave you the definitions of analytic and monographic
author). One of my jobs is to give guidance to non-librarians
in the National Park Service (rangers, mostly) who have been
saddled with the job of cataloging park libraries. When a
special issue of a journal is being treated like a monograph
(i.e., a book or report) as opposed to a periodical, I recommend
the following treatment to our "lay librarians" in the field:
- use the Book--Long form (alternatively, you could use the
Report form -- anything with fields for series title, vol, and
number will do)
- enter the "special issue" title of the journal in the title field
- enter the "special issue" editor of the journal in the monographic
author field (put "Editor" in the monographic author role field)
- enter the journal title in the series title field
- if there is a regular editor for the periodical, list this person in
the series editor field
and so on...
Cheers,
Amalin Ferguson
