[MUG] Weird behavior of Maple 6 under XP and NT
Author: Rafal Ablamowicz    Posted: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 21:11:00 -0500

>> From: Rafal Ablamowicz "rablamowicz"

I have recently installed Maple 6.02a (March 23, 2001) under Win XP
Professional and I have been plagued by an extremely disappointing
quirky behavior of Maple. I have not tested it yet with Maple 7 or 8.

First, operations like loading and saving worksheets, or copying and
pasting Maple input from one place to another in a worksheet take
extraordinary amount of time when compared to the same operations with
the same worksheets in Maple 6 running under Win NT 4.0 SP 6. Would it
have anything to do with NTFS file system in Win XP?

Second, execution of my worksheets takes about three times as much time
on my XP machine (800 MHz AMD Athlon with 512 MB RAM) than on my laptop
with Win NT 4.0 SP 6 (400 MHz PII, 192 MB RAM). Any idea why?

Third, and this problem appears on both machines, certain Maple output
disappears from a screen and is replaced with a blank space after about
a minute or so, and then some weird characters appear to fill the blanks
and overwrite the surrounding output creating a mess! However, when such
worksheet is saved and reloaded into a new window, all output appears
correct like it should be but it then again deterioriates after a
while!

In particular, when the output contains a string Cliff6:-cmul, where
Cliff6 is the name of my currently loaded module and cmul is one of its
exported procedures, the string cmul disappears first and leaves a blank
space of the same width.

I would appreciate any clue where to look for a culprit and for a
solution to any of these problems. Needless to say, I have had no such
problems in Maple V 5.1 under Win NT 4.0 on any machine even with the
same exact worksheets!

You need to operate under the "classical mode" there is something
strange about the XP default skin that causes problems. I have ran
into similar problems as well. Also these problems extend into
Matlab. But, all is fixed (at least in my case) when I made that
adjustment.

Let me know if that works.

Maple seems to be very sensitive to display drivers, but I have found that
decreasing the level of display acceleration helps this. On my current
laptop machine running Win XP I have completely turned off all the display
acceleration. Now Maple 7 almost behaves properly and nothing else seems to
be any slower. However, I don't run anything that is graphics-intensive
like games or videos, which might suffer. The problem I have is that when I
click on a 3D plot to rotate it, it still sometimes disappears, which might
be an interaction with the Synaptics TouchPad driver. Apart from this,
Maple 7 runs fine on this computer under Win XP.

Product Reviews

"Without the Maple software, we would have to spend weeks generating the equations of motion for every experiment. Then the chances that we did it right would basically be near zero. There would always be a mistake somewhere. It is very difficult to set up a dynamic motion model by hand."
- Jean-Claude PiedBeouf, Ph.D Manager of Robotics, Canadian Space Agency

"Its very good - highly accurate and easy to use. The speed of Maple allows me to change equations and quickly reintegrate them into the application, so more possibilities can be explored to achieve the precise effect desired."
Shawn Neely, Senior R & D Director for PDI/Dreamworks
