Hello,
I seem to have a problem with my Maple character display settings. I have
posted a picture at http://ron.dotson.org/temp/Picture1.gif that
illustrates the problem.
As you can see, the second and third terms in the series expansion shown
underneath the "expand(%);" command show a series of stacked special
characters to delimit each term of the series expansion instead of extra
large brackets or braces or even vertical lines, which is what I assume
should be displayed.
I suspect the problem is with my choice of symbol settings somewhere, but I
cannot find any choice of options for this. I have Maple 8 (April 22, 2002,
Build ID 110847).
Thank you,
Ron Dotson

I have no idee how you got this special characters.
But try
Format ->Styles
the window style management is coming up and then
under style: choose: maple output
-> modify
then you can choose different fonts.

Thanks very much for your help Heike, but as it turns out I sent in a
request to Maple technical support and got and answer back that solved my
problem the very next day. Maple tech support suggested that I select
"File->Preferences->IO Display" and then select either Typeset Notation or
Standard Math Notation. Well, my setting was already set for "Standard Math
Notation" but just for the heck of it I switched to "Typeset Notation" and
the large braces appeared just as they should instead of the bizarre
special characters in my example. The really strange thing is that I then
switched back to "Standard Math Notation" just to make sure the problem was
repeatable - and it wasn't! The symbols now display correctly whether I
used "Standard Math Notation" or "Typeset Notation" and I cannot recreate
the original problem! That's fine with me as long as everything works
properly. I can only assume that something hadn't been initialized properly
when I installed Maple, and that switching the I/O Output Display fonts
selection back and forth cleared up whatever the initialize problem was. In
any case I'm a happy camper now, and I wish to thank Maple tech support
very much for their quick response and effective solution to the problem.
It's really wonderful to be using a product that is actually supported by
the vendor. Just try sending an email request for help to Microsoft and see
what you get back - absolutely nothing except a computer generated reply!
Maple is a great product!
