Yes, I have encountered it on Linux and on Suns also. It is not just
certain worksheets -- it happens to me a lot -- though I hesitate to say
that it happens all the time. A colleague says that it happens all the
time for him.

To workaround, open the worksheet in Maple 6 and do the deletion there.
If the worksheet causes Maple 6 to crash, go back to Maple 7, and first
delete all the plots individually. Then go back to Maple 6 to delete the
rest.

The GUI features for Linux/Unix Maple seem to be very poorly tested. I
know many examples where the same features work better under Windows.

Dear Peter Schwenk,

I was also afflicted by a similar problem not in Maple 7 but in maple 5. I
also sent a query and had got a useful response from Thomas Richard.

I am attaching the e-mail correspondence. You may find it useful.
With kind regards,
Colin Benjamin

Are you running Maple V from an NFS mounted directory?
At least for Release 5.1, there is a known problem with accessing online
help on certain combinations of Linux 2.2.x kernel and NFS that prevents
Maple from getting a file lock.
However, this is unnecessary for help pages, so adding the mount option
nolock to your /etc/fstab (or automounter configuration or command line,
whatever you use) should work.

If it is Release 5 (in contrast to 5.1), you should also consult the
following web pages:
http://www.maplesoft.com/support/Faqs/MapleV/Installation/11.shtml
http://www.maplesoft.com/support/Downloads/linux_update.shtml

Yes, there are some Linux specific problems.

Yes, I have experienced the same problem both with Red Hat and Debian.
It was such a serious problem that I had to return back to Maple 6
(with my students).
The only fix I know is (fortunetly) this: Start using version 8.

Regards,

Dear Peter,
I encountered exactly the same problem with the Linux version of Maple
7.0. Unfortunately I am not aware of any other workaround than
updating to 8.0 or using an older version of Maple.

Product Reviews

"Without the Maple software, we would have to spend weeks generating the equations of motion for every experiment. Then the chances that we did it right would basically be near zero. There would always be a mistake somewhere. It is very difficult to set up a dynamic motion model by hand."
- Jean-Claude PiedBeouf, Ph.D Manager of Robotics, Canadian Space Agency

"Its very good - highly accurate and easy to use. The speed of Maple allows me to change equations and quickly reintegrate them into the application, so more possibilities can be explored to achieve the precise effect desired."
