[MUG] maple ps plotoutput and other graphics programs
Author: Dr U Kasper    Posted: Sat, 02 Nov 2002 13:46:14 +0100

>> From: "Dr. U. Kasper" "ukasper"

Hello, users!

My question is only more or less related to MAPLE but, perhaps, someone of
you has a hint to me.
The problem: I have from Maple a ps-plotoutput of some graphics. This file
was transformed to an eps-file. Is there a graphics program allowing to
import this eps-file, produce additional structures, and finally save the
file again as an eps-file?

What I have in mind is that I would like focusing the attention on some
special features of, for example, a curve by some graphical elements in an
easy way.

Thank you in advance for trying to help me.

Best regards,
U. kasper

I know that under Linux you can do this using a program called "The GIMP".
You can add text, draw rectangles etc., draw freehand with the mouse --
the usual drawing program features. There are more advanced features
available also.

On Linux: just use gimp and you can do what you whant, alter animations,
colours sharpen, add noise etc :)
This worked fine for me
best

PS: IF you really have a M$ system, you might try correldraw, but seek for
better advice there.

I use Adobe Illustrator for this purpose and have been pleased with it's
flexibility and ease of use.
One tricky point is that one should "release the clipping mask, compound
path, and crop marks" from the object menu.

Unfortunately maple seems to compose the lines of a plot with many many
little segments, which makes modifying the lines
rather tedious. (I wish they would change this. Mathematica is much more
convenient in that it's lines are just a few segments.)

Rob

Adobe Illustrator works well for this task. The learning curve is steep,
but there is nothing you cannot do with it. It works on Windows and
Mac, but I'm not sure about Linux.

Dr. Kasper,

You can use a package called the GIMP (search any engine for "GIMP") to open,
edit, and save EPS files.
The GIMP is available for Linux and Windows as well as others.

Hope this helps.

I use Freehand on a Macintosh to add to Maple's eps graphics output.
However it is necessary to use EPSConverter first to put the
file into the correct format. This is a program available from
ArtAge.com.

I do it with Adobe Illustrator (version 7.0). It opens the Maple
generated ps file, you can edit it and then save it as an eps file.
However, it will be larger than the original Maple ps file.

Unfortunately Illustrator is expensive. A free-ware option is pstricks
(it can be downloaded free, just type "pstricks" in googles or in any
search engine). It is a collection of latex commands that must be used
in conjunction with the elaboration of a latex file. pstricks work on
the ps file and allows you to introduce (within latex) a variety of nice
objects (arrows, extra demarcation lies, nice labels). Unfortunately,
the learning curve is very steep.

A third option is to modify the Maple ps file by hacking at its
postscript language commands.

Personaly I do not demmand aesthetic perfection. I would be very
satisfied if Maple just generated plots and their ps files with decent
labels and thickmarks (unfortunately, it does not).

Unlike one respondent to this thread, I do require strong aesthetics
in the ps version of Maple graphics. I recently wrote a book that
used such graphics extensively. To satisfy the needs of the publisher
(the AMS) I had to alter the code for line thickness by hand in every
eps file I created. Also, it has annoyed me for some time that Maple
doesn't seem able to translate the "thickness" command either to a
simple printout or to a ps version of the file. Frankly, I don't
understand why these problems persist as I gather that Mathematica
resolved this ages ago. Can someone from Maple respond here and tell
us what they are doing on this front?

"Without the Maple software, we would have to spend weeks generating the equations of motion for every experiment. Then the chances that we did it right would basically be near zero. There would always be a mistake somewhere. It is very difficult to set up a dynamic motion model by hand."
- Jean-Claude PiedBeouf, Ph.D Manager of Robotics, Canadian Space Agency

"Its very good - highly accurate and easy to use. The speed of Maple allows me to change equations and quickly reintegrate them into the application, so more possibilities can be explored to achieve the precise effect desired."
