I have a new Power Mac dual 500 MHz G-4 on which I have
installed both Maple V release 5.1 and Maple 6. I have
been using both for several weeks now. I am teaching
a course using Maple so it has gotten a good workout.
Everything seemed fine till today when I tried to print
out simple plots such as the output of plot(sin(x), x=-1..1);
On the computer monitor the plots look fine, but when
printed on my Mac LaseWriter 16/600 PS I get a blank
plot when using Maple 6 and a solid black plot area
when using Maple V. Do you have any ideas what I might
do.

This bug is known. Change your monitor to 256 colors, then
printing of embedded plots will work, even after you change back
to millions of colors.

Dear mr. Clark,
I think your problem may be in the number of colors you choose to use
to display your screen and its associated Maple plots. I suggest you
try to set the number of colors to 256. I had the same problem and
reducing the number of colors in your display will allow the plot to
come thru.

Changing the monitor to 256 colors works for Maple V--on
a Mac G4 with OS 9.0.4 and OpenGL 4.1.1. Thanks for the
tip. But it does not solve the problem for Maple 6.
Maple support suggests:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have installed OpenGL 1.1.2, try restoring one of the extensions
to OpenGL 1.1.4. This extension is: <OpenGLRendererATI>
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
At first they told me to revert to OpenGL 1.1.2---when that
caused more problems than it helped they suggested the
above. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
Does anyone else have problems with the new G4 with
OS 9.0.4 and OpenGL 1.1.4 with plot printing in Maple 6?

Folks,
The plotting problem persits into Mac OS X where it will be extremely
difficult to go back to OpenGL 1.1.2. Interestingly enough, running Maple
in Mac-on-Linux on a LinuxPPC system works very well...

Yes, it's a nightmare. We have just upgraded (?) our Mathematics lab to
Maple 6. We use networked iMacs with System 9.0.4 and cannot print, even
when the plotsetup(gdi) trick is used. Same with the G4 in my office.
We have set colors to 256.

I found a work around that is not too bad.
Maple 6 lets you export documents as RTF. If you then open the
document with Word, it prints like a charm.

The problem is Maple 6.0.x versus Apple OpenGL 1.1.3+. I have confirmed these
two work arounds (Maple 6 only).
a) revert to OpenGL 1.1.2 if you have OpenGL 1.1.3. Usually this is done in the
system folder where OpenGL resides, some system administrators may not like this
approach. Alternately you can just put the appropriate OpenGL files
(OpenGLEngine, OpenGLLibrary, OpenGLMemory, OpenGLRenderer, OpenGLRendererATI,
OpenGLUtility) in the Maple 6 folder (a good approach for network installs).
Maple will attempt to load from its folder before the system folder provided you
haven't loaded the OpenGL driver into memory from the system folder (which is
what happens when you launch another application that uses Apple OpenGL before
you launch Maple 6). Or ...
b) print at high quality (menu Options->Print Quality->High). The print preview
still fails but print out should be okay.
If you have OpenGL 1.1.4 (newer G4) then try just reverting the OpenGLRendereATI
file to 1.1.2. I have not confirmed this but have had a confirmation in the
field. Note you can not revert from OpenGL 1.1.4 to 1.1.2 as it will crash your
Mac.
I hope this helps. Please advise if the above does not work for you or any new
Mac OpenGL woes.

Mike Schmiderer

Hy
I am about to install Yellow Dog Linux on my new G4 Cube, so it is very
assuring to read that Maple runs well in Mac on Linux. However, Mac on
Linux is an emmulator, doesn't Maple run much slower?
Also: plots generated with Maple V R5.1 and Maple 6 on a G4 tower and the
G4 Cube print well in Ink Jet printers (I've tried it in an Epson Stylus
600 and a Cannon BJ-something), whereas on laser printers the cursed black
rectangle appears. I had the color settings to 256 and did not try printing
with thousands or million colors.
I am in no mood to change Open GL extensions, I think it is up to WMI to
generate a patch to correct this nasty bug !!
