Hello,
I am a new Maple user and am comparing the capabilities of Maple and
Mathematica for solving simultaneous equations symbolically. My goal is to
determine whether all parameters in a system of equations are identified
before I estimate these parameters using software such as LISREL.
When the number of equations equals the number of unknowns (i.e., the system
of equations is "just identified"), the Maple command Solve returns the
exact solution for the parameters, as I would expect. However, researchers
who use LISREL usually work with models for which the number of equations
exceeds the number of unknowns. In such cases, many possible solutions may
exist, each of which incorporates certain restrictions on variables in the
equations. In such situations, the Maple Solve command produces no output.
However, in Mathematica, the full set of solutions may be obtained using the
Reduce command instead of the Solve command. The difference between these
commands is summarized in the Mathematica manual as follows:
"The most important difference between Reduce and Solve is that Reduce gives
all the possible solutions to a set of equations, while Solve gives only the
generic ones. Solutions are considered "generic" if they involve conditions
only on the variables that you explicitly solve for, and not on other
parameters in the equations."
Does Maple have a command analogous to the Reduce command in Mathematica?
Or, more generally, can Maple be used to solve systems of equations in which
the number of equations exceeds the number of unknowns?
Thank you in advance,
Jeff Edwards
