I'm working with Mathcad 2000 at the moment - we had a copy going spare,
and it was a lot closer to my colleaagues than the v7 I have been
stubbornly sticking to these last few years, so I decided to make use of
it. No problems so far, until today - but then I haven't stressed it until
today. Actually, what I've been doing today shouldn't have been
particularly stressful - simple symbolic stuff - but stressful compared to
what I've used it for thus far. Anyway ...
... I've discovered this "interesting" bug in the equation editor. I'd be
surprised (but not amazed) if it's not known about, but I don't recall it
being aired before. I'm editing an equation (with symbolic equals, not
evaluation equals) - just manually regrouping some terms - and trying to
delete a placeholder (using the delete key on the keyboard). Three times
now, Mathcad has just instanteously shut itself down as a result. Not
crashed, just made a sharp exit - as if Delete was a (red)hotkey. One
time, Windows even asked me if I wanted to send blahblah.mcd to the
Recycle Bin ...
So now I'm proceeding very carefully, saving every few seconds, and
keeping my fingers crossed. Does anyone know anything about this bug?
Andy

What is the operating system that you are using?
Seems like a problem that I do know about incompatibility of version 2000 of Mathcad and Windows XP systems!

Markos,
Win 2k. Now you've asked, I shall try and remember to take home the
worksheet I saved that demonstrates the problem reproducibly (on Win2k)
and see if it also manifests on WinXP.

This sounds like the "crash on edit " bug that was so common in V8. I seem to recall it was a problem of varying severity (that is, how often it occurred in a given business day) until maybe v2001i patch 3 (or whatever the last patch was). It was never real clear what caused it, but it might have related to some windows system stuff.
There was no fix except save a LOT.

(Markos) I tried it at home, on WInXP, up to date sith service packs,
hotfixes and all the rest of it. Same problem.
(Eden) I also tried it again at work, with graphics acceleration turned
off. Same problem.
Here's another curious thing that I've noticed. After I start Mathcad,
open the worksheet, and delete the placeholder and Mathcad instantly shuts
itself down, when I repeat the process, the worksheet is not listed in
Mathcad's recently used file list - although it is listed in Windows
Start-Documents list.

As I recall, Mathcad 2000 isn't compatible with Windows XP, so any problems
may well be due to this. Patches won't help. The earliest compatible
version was 2001i. I've never seen this problem in any version from 2001i
onwards. Also, if Mathcad isn't shut down normally, the latest files won't
be shown, as I believe that updating this list only occurs on shutdown.

Hi Dave,
My OS at work, where I first encountered the problem, is Win2k - so it's
not an incompatibility with WinXP issue. What version of Mathcad, and what
OS, are you using? I posted the worksheet, with instructions, this
morning; did you try it?

Here is one more option to look at:
If it is a graphics card problem (looks like it), check with lower resolution or with fewer colors (try 16 bit, or even 256 colors). Bad graphics card drivers are a common problem! Turning accelaration off, doesn't do many things to a badly written driver!
Regarding the appearance of the file in Windows Start-Document list, it is something to be expected. Windows keeps a track immediately after you are opening or saving a file, in any program. Mathcad needs to shut down normaly in order to have enough time to keep this info! The same happens with Microsoft's programs too! If they shut down abnormally, then the last edited document is not listed in the recent files.
I am running out of ideas!
Good luck!

Here's another curious thing that I've noticed. After I start Mathcad, open the worksheet, and delete the placeholder and Mathcad instantly shuts itself down, when I repeat the process, the worksheet is not listed in Mathcad's recently used file list - although it is listed in Windows Start-Documents list.

What is the operating system that you are using?
Seems like a problem that I do know about incompatibility of version 2000 of Mathcad and Windows XP systems!

I'm editing an equation (with symbolic equals, not evaluation equals) - just manually regrouping some terms - and trying to delete a placeholder (using the delete key on the keyboard). Three times now, Mathcad has just instanteously shut itself down as a result. Not crashed, just made a sharp exit - as if Delete was a (red)hotkey. So now I'm proceeding very carefully, saving every few seconds, and keeping my fingers crossed. Does anyone know anything about this bug?

If you can post the example file, that would probably get it onto some other machines.
There are occasions where the Mathcad installation gets corrupted.

Hi Eden,
I posted it this morning (11:something, my time) and it must have made it
through to some people, because half an hour later, Mark Smith posted to
say he could reproduce the problem on his machine. I haven't even seen it
myself yet though, more than 6 hours later ... mind you, it took more than
3 days for my original post to get back to me.
Although I tried turning graphics acceleration off, I haven't yet tried
working at low screen res and colour depth. I'll try that last thing
before I go home.
