[mathcad] Mathcad crashes and loses saved data
Author: Mike Austin    Posted: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 11:52:26 +0100
I am running Mathcad 12.1. It occasionally crashes without notice. Never
mind. So I save my work every 10 minutes. However, despite this, Mathcad
sometimes reverts to an earlier saved version of the spreadsheet. I have
just been working on a spreadsheet for three hours, saving it regularly.
Mathcad crashed - and the last saved version is two hours old!

This has happened on a few occasions and I thought it was something that
I was doing. But now I *know* the file was saved at a later time because
I checked in Explorer. Accompanying this rather serious bug, I see that
mathcad.exe remains in Task Manager. I have seen this before, but it has
not resulted in data loss because there were no edits to lose.

I checked the temp directory and saw some files with the time stamp that
corresponded to the crash. They were locked, so I could not view them. I
suspect they contained my edits. I removed mathcad.exe from Task Manager
to release them, and they disappeared. So goodbye to two hours work.

This is a serious and frustrating bug. To be safe, it seems that one has
to close Mathcad and re-open it. Has anyone else experienced this?

Product Reviews

"Our work ranges from complex medical imaging research to large-scale mapping and diagrams and we need a tool that is able to handle anything we investigate. With Mathcad, we are able to manipulate and analyse our data quickly while at the same time documenting our work, for sharing and publication. We also use it for pilot studies conducted in support of research grant applications. It is an end-to-end tool for research and development."
Dr. Kenneth Castleman, President of Advanced Digital Imaging Research (ADIR), Houston, Texas

"Mathcad is an integral product for my work... With Mathcad, itís easy to disseminate design calculations because the documents look like real math. Thereís very little I canít do in Mathcad. The main benefits come from the format, which resemble a typed set of calculations. These programs are easier to develop by engineers and easier for others to follow and review since the logic is expressed in a familiar manner. The format is what places Mathcad head and shoulders above other programs of a similar function."
Andre Pavlov, Structural Engineer, Florida Department of Transportation
