Subject: [mathcad] Weird editor bugs (again)
I'm working with Mathcad 2000 at the moment - we had a copy going spare, and
it was a lot closer to my colleaagues than the v7 I have been stubbornly
sticking to these last few years, so I decided to make use of it. No
problems so far, until today - but then I haven't stressed it until today.
Actually, what I've been doing today shouldn't have been particularly
stressful - simple symbolic stuff - but stressful compared to what I've used
it for thus far. Anyway ...
... I've discovered this "interesting" bug in the equation editor. I'd be
surprised (but not amazed) if it's not known about, but I don't recall it
being aired before. I'm editing an equation (with symbolic equals, not
evaluation equals) - just manually regrouping some terms - and trying to
delete a placeholder (using the delete key on the keyboard). Three times
now, Mathcad has just instanteously shut itself down as a result. Not
crashed, just made a sharp exit - as if Delete was a (red)hotkey. One time,
Windows even asked me if I wanted to send blahblah.mcd to the Recycle Bin
...
So now I'm proceeding very carefully, saving every few seconds, and keeping
my fingers crossed. Does anyone know anything about this bug?
Andy

Hi, Mark.
No, I hadn't applied the service packs. However, I went and downloaded the
latest version from Adept, and applied it, and checked that the S/N had a
C after it (it did), and tested my demo worksheet, and the problem still
manifested exactly the same. The fact that it is completely reproducible
is rather unusual IME and makes me wonder if it might actually be useful
to Mathsoft, depending of course on whether it still manifests in later
versions, and whether the equation editor has been completely rewritten
for v13 as it is supposed to have been.
I've never posted a worksheet to the forum before. Would you or anyone
else be interested to see if my demo "works" on other machines and
versions? If so, do I just attach and post?

Hi all,
The red face is all mine, not Paul's. His red thing is a herring i.e. my
original posting that really did take 3 days to get back to me, and caused
me to suspect a server problem when my alleged follow-up with attachment
still hadn't got back to me 5 days later. Turns out the reason was that I
didn't post it, I emailed it direct to Mark Smith - who then replied via
the list. Hence my firm belief that I had posted it in the first place.
However, I hadn't, so (belatedly) here it is. And at least now I know why
list postings sometimes resemble buses in the way they all arrive at once.
Andy
OK, here we go. Worksheet attached, the file name is most of the
instructions! I haven't experimented with how much of the worksheet I can
chop out and still have the bug exhibit itself, life's too short. So...
1) Open worksheet, scroll to bottom. In the very last expression, you will
see an unoccupied placeholder. Click it to select it with the blue
right-angle thingy, hit Delete on keyboard. Wave a quick goodbye to
Mathcad.
2) I just tried an alternative Delete method. After clicking placeholder
to select it with the blue right-angle thing, I tried carefully dragging
to select it the alternative way i.e. so it is covered with the black box
thing (I did this because when I previously reported weird copy and paste
behaviour in the editor, I was advised to use the black box method rather
than the blue right-angle method). This time, when I hit Delete, the
selection just reverts to the blue right-angle method. Go to 1) ...

Andy,
Yes, I did repeat your dilemma in MathCAD 12, and I was amazed how fast
MathCAD went away.
The simplest work-a-round is once you have the editor bar on the
placeholder, press Insert to reverse its direction then delete it with a
backspace or two, or three.

"I was amazed how fast MathCAD went away" :-) Unnerving, isn't it? So it
happens in Mathcad 12 too, eh? Hmmm. What OS are you using?
Interesting that you used Backspace instead of Delete. That would never
have occurred to me. I tried both flavours of blue right-angled cursor
with Backspace and Delete. Backspace works with both flavours. You've seen
the consequence of using Delete with one flavour... and as I posted in
reply to Mark Smith, trying to use Delete with the other flavour just
"reverses flavour polarity" for me (his mileage varied, evidently). It's
been so long since I had to refer to the manual that you've got me
wondering now if Backspace is the way I'm supposed to Delete things
(albeit even if it is, hitting Delete shouldn't have such catastrophic
results). I'm going to check.

I'm working with Mathcad 2000 at the moment - we had a copy going spare,
and it was a lot closer to my colleaagues than the v7 I have been
stubbornly sticking to these last few years, so I decided to make use of
it. No problems so far, until today - but then I haven't stressed it
until today. Actually, what I've been doing today shouldn't have been
particularly stressful - simple symbolic stuff - but stressful compared
to what I've used it for thus far. Anyway ...
... I've discovered this "interesting" bug in the equation editor. I'd
be surprised (but not amazed) if it's not known about, but I don't
recall it being aired before. I'm editing an equation (with symbolic
equals, not evaluation equals) - just manually regrouping some terms -
and trying to delete a placeholder (using the delete key on the
keyboard). Three times now, Mathcad has just instanteously shut itself
down as a result. Not crashed, just made a sharp exit - as if Delete was
a (red)hotkey. One time, Windows even asked me if I wanted to send
blahblah.mcd to the Recycle Bin ...
So now I'm proceeding very carefully, saving every few seconds, and
keeping my fingers crossed. Does anyone know anything about this bug?
Andy

"I was amazed how fast MathCAD went away" :-) Unnerving, isn't it? So it
happens in Mathcad 12 too, eh? Hmmm. What OS are you using?
Interesting that you used Backspace instead of Delete. That would never
have occurred to me. I tried both flavours of blue right-angled cursor
with Backspace and Delete. Backspace works with both flavours. You've
seen the consequence of using Delete with one flavour... and as I
posted in reply to Mark Smith, trying to use Delete with the other
flavour just "reverses flavour polarity" for me (his mileage varied,
evidently). It's been so long since I had to refer to the manual that
you've got me wondering now if Backspace is the way I'm supposed to
Delete things (albeit even if it is, hitting Delete shouldn't have such
catastrophic results). I'm going to check.

"?and it went away?". ? . Do you mean you can't reproduce the symptom now?
Or are you just referring to Mathcad's amazing disappearing act?
I've checked the manual now, and it seems Backspace and Delete are
partners in crime (I probably use Backspace as well as Delete when editing
without even being conscious of doing so now). In summary, it seems like
Backspace deletes to the left of the vertical bar, Delete deletes to the
right, and repetition of either one will end up equivalent to a single one
of same after a drag-select.
So according to how I read the manual, what should happen in the worksheet
I posted, when I click the placeholder to select it with the editing
lines, with vertical bar to the left, and hit Delete, is that the editing
lines should change to a drag-select region, and hitting Delete again
should delete the placeholder. However, the (intended) rules seem to be
slightly different for placeholders than they do for expressions. As
already pointed out, the deletion process works if changed so that the
vertical line is to the right and Backspace is used instead; the first
Backspace deletes the preceding operator and replaces it with an operator
placeholder, and the second Backspace deletes both placeholders together.
So it works, but not exactly how the manual implies it ought to work (or
rather how I infer it ought to work, given the manual only talks about
deleting expressions and does not explicitly mention placeholders). This
would imply that hitting Delete is indeed a legitimate thing to do, and
that doing so ought to replace the following operator with a placeholder,
and doing it again ought to delete both placeholders together. But no. It
seems to open up a black hole and delete Mathcad from memory completely.
Now that's what I call a bug :-)

Andy,
The symptoms continue, I was just referring to the thread topic.
Obviously a bug has been identified.
Unfortunately when I beta tested version 13, this phenomenon was not one
I checked out.
Possibly and hopefully someone else caught it and it will cease to exist
in version 13.
To those actually at Mathsoft - any comments?

Hi Andy,
yes, we've been following this, and yes, it's repeatable in version 13.
It doesn't seem to be just any old placeholder, or even just any old
placeholder in a matrix. But it's a logged bug now, so we'll get it.
Wierd.
