[MATHCAD] Reference Bug?
Author: Bill Hoad    Posted: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 21:27:29 +0100
Hi
I'm using V7.03. I set a reference, in a worksheet (Main say), to
another worksheet using INSERT REFERENCE. I then added more variables in
the referenced worksheet and saved it. These are not recognised in Main
unless I reset the reference. Bug? or am I missing something.

I have also had this problem. I could not get 'Main' to update a
referenced worksheet. It seems that one has to re-load the 'Main'
worksheet before it can "see" any changes made in the referenced
worksheet, which has be re-saved?. In the past I have also used sheets
which are more than two layers deep - and then the inconvenience starts
to really matter as I find it difficult to be certain that everything is
up to date before believing the answers!

To get References to update, the 'referenced' sheet first of all needs to
be saved (as Mathcad will only 'see' the saved copy). Then, in the sheet
including the reference, click on the reference region and use F9 to get it
to recalculate. Any changes affecting this sheet will then be cascaded
through the worksheet. I don't believe this is a bug as such, rather it
gives the user a chance to decide when to apply the changes and avoid
recalculating every time a minor change is made to the referenced sheet.

Fair point, but wouldn't it be much better if changes in the
'referenced' sheet were always seen by the main sheet whatever the save
status? The ideal situation would be to have several levels of
referenced sheets open (and tiled), and be able to make changes to any
of them and the changes would always cascade down through the chain. In
any case, why would a sheet be referenced if its contents were not
required - if it played no part in the calculation, why not just remove
it?
I appreciate that this would probably be quite difficult to achieve from
a programming point of view, but I think it would greatly enhance this
already useful facility.

Have you tried in the "main" program issuing a "Calculate Worksheet"
command (under the Math menu)? This should work.

I see the point but strictly speaking, to follow the philosophy of
Mathcad, automatic application of the changes should be determined by
whether the automatic calculation option is set. BTW what happens if the
referenced worksheet has uncalculated results? ie should we F9 each
reference at startup.
