Andy,
The symptoms continue, I was just referring to the thread topic.
Obviously a bug has been identified.
Unfortunately when I beta tested version 13, this phenomenon was not one
I checked out.
Possibly and hopefully someone else caught it and it will cease to exist
in version 13.
To those actually at Mathsoft - any comments?

"...and it went away...". ? . Do you mean you can't reproduce the
symptom now? Or are you just referring to Mathcad's amazing disappearing
act?
I've checked the manual now, and it seems Backspace and Delete are
partners in crime (I probably use Backspace as well as Delete when
editing without even being conscious of doing so now). In summary, it
seems like Backspace deletes to the left of the vertical bar, Delete
deletes to the right, and repetition of either one will end up
equivalent to a single one of same after a drag-select.
So according to how I read the manual, what should happen in the
worksheet I posted, when I click the placeholder to select it with the
editing lines, with vertical bar to the left, and hit Delete, is that
the editing lines should change to a drag-select region, and hitting
Delete again should delete the placeholder. However, the (intended)
rules seem to be slightly different for placeholders than they do for
expressions. As already pointed out, the deletion process works if
changed so that the vertical line is to the right and Backspace is used
instead; the first Backspace deletes the preceding operator and replaces
it with an operator placeholder, and the second Backspace deletes both
placeholders together. So it works, but not exactly how the manual
implies it ought to work (or rather how I infer it ought to work, given
the manual only talks about deleting expressions and does not explicitly
mention placeholders). This would imply that hitting Delete is indeed a
legitimate thing to do, and that doing so ought to replace the following
operator with a placeholder, and doing it again ought to delete both
placeholders together. But no. It seems to open up a black hole and
delete Mathcad from memory completely. Now that's what I call a bug :-)
