The expression simplifies "correctly" in version 7 Pro if you use
simplify,assume=RealRange(0,infinity). i.e. the variables are all positive
real. Interesting that the earlier version 5 apparently finds the "correct"
answer without this. I hadn't realised that this was happening (OK, I
should have) - maybe it explains why some expressions I thought should
simplify apparently didn't.

Ah! It works in v8 Pro too. I'm slow this morning; I was trying to
do it by applying "assume" only to the variables. Having re-read
p284, I've just twigged the crucial point that your above form makes
all "indeterminates" positive real - not just variables. Otherwise
the simplification can't go any further with expressions like SQRT(b^2/a^2).

I can't remember where v5 was regarding handling of complex numbers.
Presumably it just assumed all indeterminates were real?

Ray,

Would your MathCAD file show the tweaking necessary to achieve what I am
looking for with version 8?

Sure; rather than bother everyone with the attachment, I'll send you
a copy directly.
