Many thanks for several interesting comments on a very small complex
part for the real root of a completely real equation. It is indeed
the case that due to rounding a very small complex number can appear
even if the arithmetic is supposed to be real. (for example if the
program needs to take the square root of a number that should really be
zero but is a tiny bit negative due to rounding). Jan's idea that

seems like a good one to me. Dave Powley in his answer points out that
with Version 12.1 he did not encounter any of my problems (I use
something older called 2001i).
