[mathcad] MathCAD 14 file format
Author: Malcolm Reeves    Posted: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 10:08:36 +0000
Hi All,

Not sure if this has been mention but those with 14 can select whether
files are saved as compressed or uncompressed. I opened an old
MathCAD 11 file and save it. The results were:

11 - 110k (.mcd)
14 - 376k (.xmcd)
14 - 95k (.xmcdz)

That's due to xmcd being mostly in plain text. Plain text does mean
it is perhaps possible to fix a corrupt file but on the other hand it
is 4 times more disk space. I've opted for the compressed. A zip
program I have called Iceows will open xcdmz and read the compressed
data so that may be an option with a corrupt file, if Iceows can still
get something out of a corrupt zip.

Unfortunately, your results are old news. Since the departure from the native binary format of M11 and the introduction of the XML file format, which is text-based, Mathcad's files have experienced a gigantic explosion in file size, and noly mitigated by the compressed file format.

Also check the images option in the file properties. The default is
for Mathcad to include bitmap images of all math regions (supposedly
allowing a sheet to be properly displayed outside of Mathcad, although
I've not seen any references to an application that can actually do
so). That accounts for a good deal of the bloat and can be turned
off.
