[mathcad] Contouring irregular data
Author: Rob Beale    Posted: Thu, 24 Jul 2008 10:49:17 +0100
I have data in the form of x,y and z coordinates which is bounded by a
rectangular region from a set of experimental data. As the data is not
defined over a regular grid is there any way that Mathcad can produce
contour plots of the data?

I look forward to hearing fro you

I can't help you on this question, Rob. But while we're on the subject of
contour plots, I have not succeeded in placing (overlaying) a single data
point on a contour plot. Does anybody have a hint?

The Help page "Graphing Multiple 3D Plots" says you can add additional
matrices to form additional plots, but it's not clear to me what the
result would be for contour plots (interfering contours might require
careful color choices, etc.). I tried adding a simple 3-element vector
[x0, y0, z0] for my isolated 2nd point, but this didn't work. I see
elsewhere in Help that "A plotted matrix must have at least two rows and
two columns" so I'm going to try forming a triangle on the plot surface by
expanding my vector to a 3x3 matrix with neighboring x and y values and
identical z values. Mathcad might then recognize this as a dataset for
which a contour can be defined.

- Bill

P.S. It looks like I may have answered my own question while typing a
description of the problem. Well, that happens sometimes.

Bill,

You can add a single point if you plot it as a data point. See attached.

When you have multiple plots in a graph each one can be a different
type. Usually you would not have more than one contour plot, which
will occupy the X-Y plane. To plot points over a contour plot they
would usually be plotted the usual way you would plot points -- as
scatter plots.
