[mathcad] RE: Mathcad 11! Platinum!! Limited edition!!!
Author: Stuart Bruff    Posted: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 12:29:43 +0100
I cheerfully confess that marketing is an art that is beyond me, but there
are reasons which do not necessarily reflect a lack of confidence in a
product.

For example, I know some car dealers used to have sell a certain number of
cars to obtain a given discount from the manufacturers; so they'd just get
rid of a couple of cars at ridiculous prices to ensure they'd sold their
quota. OTOH, I also know that some companies will offer discounts to
encourage their user base to migrate to the latest version. This can reduce
their support investment in older versions and allow them to rationalize
support. It can also revitalize the user base; cheaper prices mean it's more
likely the user can afford the upgrade, and once the user has the new
version they can appreciate the improved performance and reliability and
tell others. It can also help prevent other companies filling any capability
gap that users may perceive with a competitively priced alternative.

I have no idea why Adept are offering such a package, but even a hardened
cynic like myself can appreciate that there might be business reasons that
have nothing to do with any shortcoming in the Mathcad R11.

Overall, I get less problems with R11 than 2000 and don't seem to have some
of the limitations that 2001 users report. There are some pretty competent
worksheets out there doing what Mathcad was designed to do, on many
versions. Every version has its problems, but I haven't come across any
that outweigh Mathcad's virtues.

On another point. I have always had excellent support from Adept (4 years).
I see no reason to judge them "Inept". They have noted problems that I may
have experienced and either resolve them or passed them on to Mathsoft (who
also listen).

I am pleased to see that R11 (and possibly 2001, but I never got round to
installing it) has resolved several of these problems. If you want a (top
of the head) 2000 professional example of a fixed problem:

f(x y) := x^2 + y (Just some random function, doesn't
matter what it is)

g(n) := | [a b]<-f(n^2, cos(n)) (An equally random function, which matters
just as little)
| a*b

This wouldn't work on my v2000, I had to assign the result of f() to a
single variable and extract a and b from that. I had temporarily forgotten
about this limitation and coded a program as above in R11, as it is a fairly
intuitive way of doing it. It worked. I then got confused when the program
wouldn't run on v2000.

Stuart Bruff

PS. My only reason for not leaping at this offer is persuading my financial
controller that the household budget can stretch to it!
