My information is that MathCad Prime does not do symbolic calculations -
If that information is correct, I am totally baffled as symbolics is
my principal reason for using MC (since the early nineties! ) even
if symbolics is not MC's strong suit.

MathCad Prime is useless to me without the symbolics ,
and shipping MC 15 with MathCad Prime does not help.
Indeed, the argument "use an earlier version of MC for symbolics" is
absurd.

Anyway, it's nice to see this list is alive again -

RE: [mathcad] MathCad Prime
Author: Dumke, Bill    Posted: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 16:46:57 +0000
Marc,

I tried to do a symbolic problem in Mathcad 15, but could not do it directly. A contributor on the PTC Community did come up with a way to do it in Mathcad 15 which worked, but it was awkward. Whereas Mathcad 11, which I understand used the Maple 5 symbolic engine, worked fine, once I learned that "lh" meant left hand.

So maybe there is a point to "use an earlier version of MC for symbolics". Although I doubt this is what PTC meant, since there is no money in Mathcad 11.

Re: [mathcad] MathCad Prime
Author: Jonny    Posted: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 18:44:10 +0000
Prime 2.0 - will be out this Feb 2012

Focus is on bridging the gap to Mathcad 15.0 and updating platform support
and performance.

Some highlights

-Symbolics
-3D plots
-Excel Components
-64-bit native support - leverage your hardware for larger data sets
-Multi-threading
-Updated solvers for optimization (Knitro solvers)
-Areas

If you haven't already looked at Prime 1.0, you can see

-Mixed units in Matrices
-Spec tables
-Intuitive matrix widget
-Edit matrices on the fly
-Snap to grid to allow clarity in document layout (switch grid on/off)
-Searchable function library with Tool tips
-References that update when you recalc - without having to close and
reopen.
-Cached include files (reference files) so you don't have to send the
reference files if didn't want to or indeed forgot to.

Should there power users (not excluding new or light uers) who feel some
features may still be missing and you would like you say regarding what
should or should not be in Mathcad Prime x....you can make your comments
here

http://communities.ptc.com/groups/enhancing-mathcad

Best regards

Thomas

RE: [mathcad] MathCad Prime
Author: Dumke, Bill    Posted: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 20:21:21 +0000
Please don’t think that Mathcad 15 will not do symbolic. There was only that one time I had a problem with it.

Mathematica is extremely expensive. For the kind of work I do, Mathcad works fine, and the GUI interface and graphics are very nice.

Oh thx. Symbolics was one of the reason I wanted to give a shot at 15 over 2001. The "lh" bit is also present in 2001.

Was surprised going back to Eng school that MCad was not only not present but also mainly unknown in the student community. Mathematica is a free download with a one year academic license.......

Marc,

I tried to do a symbolic problem in Mathcad 15, but could not do it directly. A contributor on the PTC Community did come up with a way to do it in Mathcad 15 which worked, but it was awkward. Whereas Mathcad 11, which I understand used the Maple 5 symbolic engine, worked fine, once I learned that “lh” meant left hand.

So maybe there is a point to “use an earlier version of MC for symbolics”. Although I doubt this is what PTC meant, since there is no money in Mathcad 11.

MathCad Prime is useless to me without the symbolics ,
and shipping MC 15 with MathCad Prime does not help.
Indeed, the argument "use an earlier version of MC for symbolics" is absurd.

Anyway, it's nice to see this list is alive again -

and you can expect to see another release of Mathcad Prime in the near future which will continue this process.

RE: [mathcad] MathCad Prime
Author: Dumke, Bill    Posted: Wed, 1 Feb 2012 19:20:10 +0000
I am publishing a large document now in word 2007 using a lot of Mathcad 15 XY plots. One thing I have found useful is to copy the xy plot then “paste special” back into an unused area in Mathcad 15. There is an option to “save as an enhanced metafile”. Choose that. Then cut the enhanced metafile plot out of Mathcad 15 and paste it into the Word 2007 document. It appears to save it as a vector graphic from the increase in the Word file size I have seen, rather than a bitmap. So it doesn’t clog up Word 2007 as badly, especially with long documents with a lot of plots.

And Math regions on top of the plot don’t hide what is behind it anymore either.

Text and Math regions can be also copied this way as well, which is handy. Word (Yucch!) is a royal pain in positioning graphics on the page. So things can get messed up just copying the text by itself onto a Word page with a large graphic on it, for example.

Mathcad 15 isn’t up to publishing anything from my experience.

Was only trying to say that if there are no new "have to have features" in 15 Symbolics (and maybe a few features that have disappeared: I have used the "lh"), there is no big motivation for me to move to 15.

I am on a very tight schedule with the school homework and projects and will rather stick with the little I know.

The school wanted the projects turned in Word Format, and I read that 15 offers expanded publishing options. But they have made an exception now and accepts my prints to PDF.

What would made a big difference for me in the speed of writing new sheets is to have a list of variables to pick from instead of hunting for them and cut and paste throughout the sheet to verify spelling etc (like range names in Excel and it looks like Mathematica also offers). But it doesn't look like 15 does this. Better error messages would also help....

The Excel link features are also tempting in 15.

Thanks for your insights.

Le 31/01/2012 10:49, a écrit :
The first fruit of this work was Mathcad Prime 1.0 which was a step along the way to transforming Mathcad ...

Indeed, the argument "use an earlier version of MC for symbolics" is absurd.

Anyway, it's nice to see this list is alive again -

Cheers

Marc Artzrouni

and you can expect to see another release of Mathcad Prime in the near future which will continue this process.
