[mathcad] graphs publication
Author: Marc Artzrouni    Posted: Wed, 03 Dec 2008 10:45:00 +0100
I've just upgraded to MathCad 14 and found that there is still no simple
way of exporting publication-quality
graphs - When I have a MC graph I want to insert in a latex (or other)
document I am reduced to cutting out (exporting) the data
and redoing the graph in Matlab - Am I missing something? I would be
most grateful to hear how others export
good quality graphs into eps or pdf files (preferably without half a
dozen steps or expensive softwares!).
Many thanks

I use CTRL copy, then paste special - paste as windows metafile in to word or power point. This worked fine in office 2003, but I'm finding problems in office 2007.

By default, the new office shows a blank canvas until you right click, and select edit picture. Then the picture appears.

The other problem is vertical text gets "straightened out" i.e. turned horizontal. This is true even if I make the picture a bit map using an image editor.

method of copying Mathcad directly rather unstable.

I would suspect  Neevia Docuprinter Pro ($49) would be worth looking at.  www.neevia.com
You could alway use free pdf drivers or free graphic file creation software.  However, the neat thing about Docuprinter Pro is that it will create files in pretty well  most formats you can think of including pdf, eps, tiff etc.  I have not tried it with my own Mathcad but I was very impressed with it for other pdf and screen grab type situations.  Neevia is used by at least one very large multi-national corporation when I used it.  (The problem was that they were not so free with the Mathcad licences).

Professor,

I have a tool which can help you.

What it is:

xmcdGetPicture.exe

A compiled Perl script to extract images stored in Mathcad Worksheet (XMCD).
Work with Mathcad 12, 13, 14 xmcd worksheet.

To use:
xmcdGetPicture.exe filename.xmcd

Example:
xmcdGetPicture.exe param2d_MC14.xmcd

However, it is bigger than 200K, so I cannot send to the mailing list; and
your mail system will not accept the zipped file because of the exe file
inside.

if you have other mailbox, let me know.

Frank,
I'd be interested in the exe as well. I'm particularly interested in the
picture format inside the XMCD. Is is a standard XML coding? I've not seen
anything about it on the mathcad side.

[mathcad] graphs publication
Author: Marc Artzrouni    Posted: Fri, 12 Dec 2008 13:49:24 +0100
Thanks for suggesting xmcdGetPicture.exe but it seems like an awful lot
of trouble to extract MathCad graphs that are so-so (impossible to
annotate, etc).
Exporting a text file of the data and drawing the graph in another
sofware is really easy - I use MATLAB to read the data and draw the
graphs but
one can use any software such as R or Scilab. Matlab requires a
few lines of code
to draw nice graphs that are readily exportable as eps or pdf formats
(all annotations possible, including with Greek letters, etc.). No
doubt a future
version of MathCad will have that ability to export a graph as eps or
pdf! . Once
the MATLAB code is written the changes are easy to make and "live":
change the data in MathCad and just rerun the Matlab program to get updated
graphs -

Cheers

Frank,

I'd like a copy of the exe file as well. I believe a zipped file will go through our firewall here.

Re: [mathcad] graphs publication
Author: Frank Morgan    Posted: Fri, 12 Dec 2008 10:24:44 -0500
Philip,

Mathcad stores images of what you see in the document in xmcd worksheet by
default. You can ask it not to in the file properties setting.

To change the setting, click menu File > Properties…

Or you can open the xmcd file, find the setting in
worksheet/settings/fileFormat .The following will be close to what you get
there:
<fileFormat image-type="image/png" image-quality="75"
save-numeric-results="true" exclude-large-results="true"
save-text-images="true" screen-dpi="96"/>

How images are stored
Open one of your worksheet in an xml editor, or a text editor, you will find
many xml elements like this:
<rendering item-idref="1"/>

For example, for a plot region:
<region region-id="5" left="18" top="78" width="171" height="146.25"
align-x="18" align-y="78" show-border="false" show-highlight="false"
is-protected="true" z-order="0" background-color="inherit" tag="">
<plot disable-calc="false" item-idref="3"/>
<rendering item-idref="4"/>
</region>

The rendering part is where image is stored. Now go to binaryContent part,
find the item with id "4".
<binaryContent>
<item item-id="4">iVBORw0KGgoAAAA
The text of this item is the image, after Base64 encoding. If you decode the
string back, you will get binary data of the image.

You can find more about Base64 encoding from Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base64
If you would like to write a program to get the images, in Perl use package
MIME::Base64 - Encoding and decoding of base64 strings. In .NET use Convert
class.

Marc, latex is a thing used by my grandpa' to make books (and by
Michelin to make tires ... but that's another latex) :P

You may copy the graphs directly to MS Word, make pdfs either directly
from MathCAD or MS Word AND the winner is ... :-)

Merry xmas.

Now, let's put up with the common 20-30 "I am at my mom's having
pudding and will be back on the ... if you have any urgent matter,
please, contact Santa Claus" :P HEY PAUL: what are we going to do with
your list manager ? :P

W/best wishes,

Aldo P. Solari (fisheries biologist, PhD)

Hello Aldo,

One of the main drawbacks of Mathcad is that you can not import the
worksheets into the Latex.
The only viable thing is to export it as pictures or pdfs (all the
pages, one at a time - or making some acrobatics with screen shots).
I do not know any other way (maybe someone does?)

Have you ever tried to copy Mathcad worksheets (or part of it like
graphics) into MSword and work with it. Lots of surprises, especially
when you want to print those pages.
I bet that you can not persuade your clever grandpa' to use MS Word and
make books :-) .

Regards,
grandpa' Radovan
