To address my own question:
I got my old custom style files to work by removing a bunch of
potentially forbidden characters from the file names. It was
necessary to remove periods, apostrophe's, ampersands, number signs,
and maybe some other stuff. Once the names were stripped down, EN9
recognized all my files.
This limitation might already be know to Thomson, although I haven't
found any sign of it in their documentation. Since all these files
work fine in EN7, I'd call it a bug.
