Dear colleagues,
This is my second annual wish list, which I will be sending to
suggestions. If you reply, delete the irrelevant bits to keep the
thread shorter.
2,3 and 4 come from last years wish list, 1 gets reinserted to fix the
bug and a new addition, which I have asked for on a regular basis but
was somehow omitted from my list last year. This will be the list I send
to suggestions (online). Any support to suggestions welcome, there is
power in numbers. Anything you wish for, send it to suggestions, but
send it here too, to canvas support.
1. capability to search the record for terms
Comment - (Turned out this was already possible
in Endnote 7, with
the Go to command, but it has become non-functional in
Endnote 8
according to this users group)
2. the ability to change text to a symbol (search and replace
"beta" for the
symbol for beta).
3. Ability to COPY a field to another field - especially the
record number
4. Ability to incorporate the record number in a style template
(currently
can only append to front or back of the output bibliography)
5. The preferences, such as changes to reference types DO NOT GO
INTO THE
REGISTRY, but become a separate file easily moved from computer
to
computer. It would be even better if they could be incorporated
into
the individual library itself, although I suspect the
difficulty would
be when you want to open multiple libraries, which might cause
a problem.

Leanne,

Should be possible in en.8 using the "change text" command, as there is a
unicode symbol for pretty much anything. (Beta is u&h03b2).

I agree about the record number... and the reference type, by the way.
Copying other fields (all, I think) is possible using the change/move
fields command (move actually copies, rather than moves... of course! can't
you tell from the name??!?).

Here here! To those of us who are not fazed by editing the registry, this
is less of an insurmountable problem than an annoyance. Yet, it would still
be really useful for things like automatic backups (which are substantially
more involved if you need to extract information from the registry). A move
like this takes some reprogramming, but I agree that the benefits far
outweigh the effort.
My major gripe on this front is copying the *change case* list, which I
don't think is in the same registry key, nor in a simple file in the
endnote directory. (I'll find it eventually). I can synchronise my library
across multiple computers by storing it on a removable drive; but without a
file for the change case list, I have to do it manually every time!
In terms of whether these preferences should be incorporated into a
library, I would find that prohibitive because I use multiple libraries.
Perhaps there could be a compromise in which information could be stored in
a "travelling preferences file" and the user prompted whether or not to
change the defaults on the computer where this information differed from
that in the library.

Phew!
Can I add some of my own? Mine are rather small:
6. The ability to italicise "ibid." for repeated citations in the en. style.
7. The ability to refer to another citation in the bibliography when an
output style asks for a book chapter as e.g., "Smith, J. (2004). "The
meaning of life," in Jones, B. (2004), 380-96."
8. The ability to set an italicised word in roman script when the rest of
the field is formatted in italics.
9. Incorporated support for typists marks, such as curly
quotes/apostrophes, en-dashes, non-breaking spaces, etc., without having to
rely on character maps and unicode values...
Oh, and yeah...
10. A version of en.8 which is compatible with winXP sp2, which really does
cope with unicode characters, and which only takes *one* time to install it
properly!

I've been requesting that for years myself. I gave up and started
underlining the word(s) in question and changing them manually later.

On a Mac, these are all fortunately easy to type without resorting to
Unicode, etc., but I agree with you.
My own:
1. be able to change the language of a spell check dictionary on the fly
(i.e., without having to dig through a few dialogue boxes). This might
consist of a tool bar addition with a drop-down language list (such as is
the case with the font names) and/or a floating pallet with the languages
listed where the user could just click on the desired one.
2. on Macs, utilise the Mac's built in spell checker so that misspelled
words are indicated immediately (i.e., underlined in red) in the
user-selected default language OR have the same facility built in to EN
3. ability to handle R to L (Arabic, Hebrew, Syriac, etc.) languages
properly. EN 8 is not out on the Mac yet (which I use), so I don't know if
this exists in the Win version already or not, but I am guessing not.
4. ability to search for formatted text (font name, point size, bold,
italic, superscript, etc.)
5. as per #4, ability to change formatting (e.g., change all instances of 12
point Symbol bold to 10 point SuperGreek italic).
Frankly I would just settle with EN doing what ISI claims it should without
causing major problems.
Cheers,
Troy

Adding to Leanne's and Michael's items:
1. Enhanced search and replace, including advanced search techniques such as
pattern matching; the ability to preview a replace; a redesigned search box
with optional simple and advanced searching; the ability to have multiple
search boxes open at the same time, and the ability to search across files.
2. Exporting enhancements: export to a relational delimited format, or
better yet, ODBC support; export selected records while keeping record
numbers in tact. This feature would make it easier to work collaboratively
and to cull Endnote files without messing up past and current work.
3. Having the option to add the Endnote filename to field codes, which
produces the ability to use references from multiple files in a single
document. Conversely, having the option to add the document filename to
field codes, which would enable writers of long documents to break their
work into multiple files and maintain a single consistent reference list.
And for people like me, having the ability to place references at the end of
sections of a single document.
4. Endnote has become an essential tool of my work. I access Endnote files
every day for a variety of purposes, and suspect that others are using the
product in multiple ways as well. Therefore, it is essential that the
developer markets a first rate product that has been adequately tested. This
feature definitely qualifies as an upgrade.

How about check-boxes to permit easier selection of multiple references?
The current system of using the CONTROL key is awkward; just once forget to
hold CONTROL down while selecting multiple references, and you have to go
all the way back to square-one.

CONTROL+select is Standard Windows Behaviour
Checkboxes as well, yes, but not instead.
