Does anyone know a way to import references from Papyrus without losing the
Location field?

Dear Imogen,
Yes.
I've rewritten both the export format from Papyrus and the import format
into EndNote as well as creating a way to import Papyrus Notecards into
EndNote. I'm happy to send you a copy of the guide and the necessary
files, but I have one or two 'i's to dot and 't's still to cross before I
want to make it generally available. If you're interested, drop me a line.
Have you spoken to Maggie Shapland at Bristol? She might be able to help
you even more quickly.
Best wishes,
Duncan

It can be done, but it's a bit fiddly. You have to perform a "find and
replace" on your downloaded file of references so as to replace each line
break with two line breaks, separated by a forward slash (/).
The filter will import this file of references quite well, despite the extra
line breaks and forward slashes, providing that the "Record Layout" option
is not searching for a blank line between records. (There are plenty of
other identifiers that you can use for the Record Layout). Also, you can use
the Field Editing to remove forward slashes which will appear at the end of
some fields (e.g. Pages). It would also be wise to have the filter import
the REF field into a special field (e.g. Custom 1).
After import, your references will still be in one paragraph, but there will
be a forward slash between each one. You can now use EndNote's "Change Text"
command to search for the slash in that field and replace it with a return.
I will email you off-list with a filter that has been amended for this
purpose.
