The manual is confusing on this topic. It states - "While it is not required,we recommend that you uninstall the prior version of EndNote before installing EndNote 5." . We now upgrade without uninstalling version 4 first, and have had no problems. I suspect their recommendation to "uninstall the prior version" may be relevant if versions earlier than 4 are involved.
