Entering same information many times
Author: Jonathan Gold    Posted: 14/09/2001 00:50:17 GDT
Hi. I'm wondering if there's a way in EndNote to enter the same information
many times.

What I am doing is entering a bunch of reports and presentations from a
recent Conference into our EndNote bibliography. Because all of the reports
come from the same Conference, a LOT of the information fields (Place,
Event, Date, and so on) are identical. Is there a way to NOT have to retype
this information over and over?

Thanks,

Jonathan Gold

You can use the clipboard (through the edit menu or the ctrl-c and
ctrl-v keyboard shortcut) to copy and paste a "master entry" (maybe one
with just the conference details, etc) and then just change the details
in abstract or wherever. From memory, when you are looking at your list
of documents in endnote, if you just copy and paste it inserts a new
entry identical to the one you copied.

Why not copy and paste the first reference and then use it as a
template for the others. That's what I do...

There is a way described in the EndNote 5 manual on page 83. It involves
creating a reference 'template' that contains all the information that does
not
change. Close that (incomplete) reference window, select it in your library
window, press Control+C to copy and then Control+V to paste as many times as

you need it. Finally, you simply fill in the gaps. I haven't tried it but it

makes sense. Good luck, Joerg

Copy the first one and paste it back in, then change the fields that need to
be changed On the PC, select the line in the library, then Ctr-C, Ctrl-V.
Voila, two of the same thing, then open the new one and change it.

Hope that French, doesn't upset anyone! ;-)

The only way I know of is cut and paste. I keep a listing for a
conference open and just cut and paste into my new
listings. I would be interested in finding a better way as well.

Wouldn't it be so nice to be able to duplicate an entry,
then go change pages or title or whatever single field
that needed changing??? Is this possible without cutting
and pasting each field? TL Herbert, Charleston, SC

If you are using endnote 4 and 5, there is the facility to enter data
into a specified field in all references.

Open the library you want to enter the same information into say
Label field,
Go to References | Change field |
A box will appear with the choices
In ........ Field
Change
Insert after field's text
Insert before field's text
Replace whole field
Clear field

In the text box to the right you add the information you want across
all references.

I hope this helps

Vicki

All information is in the manual:

change a field (already responded on the circle),
copy an entry (reference) and paste it as many times, then adjust. This
is the best way to enter the chapters of a collective book or conference
for example.
Suggestion :
1/ enter the reference of the book,
2/ copy and paste, change the type to chapter and adjust.
