Shane and others,
I am also working on a dissertation (actually, I'm avoiding it at the moment
as I write this message) and also have wondered about the "Author blah blah
(1999) blah blah..." situation in my writing. Your questions inspired me to
RTFM :-). In EN5 (Windows, and maybe Mac?), you can "customize a formatted
citation" per the directions on pp. 200-201 (Ch. 10) of the EN5 manual. You
click on a formatted citation, and choose "Edit citation(s)" from the EN5
submenu of the Word "Tools" menu. An editing dialog box opens with various
relevant options. I also work on a Mac using EN3.0. Its manual describes
the procedure for "omitting Authors or Years" on pp. 245-246 (Ch. 11) which
simply amounts to nanually deleting the either the Author or Year from the
temporary citation e.g. [Author, 1999, #34] is edited to [, 1999, #34].
Note that you need to leave the comma in place. I'm guessing this probably
works for temporary citation in later versions of EN as well. Hope that is
helpful.
