The style must have been altered, or you are using a different style.  you need a comma followed by a space in the citaton author settings (where I put in comma space in the image attached).

oops, messed that up upon reflection The citation template needs to be (Author, Year) and the  et al should stay as it was with no comma.

The most likely reason is that the output style you are using has the option "use initials only for primary authors with the same name" checked. You can turn this off by editing the output style within EndNote.   Edit > Output Style > Edit [name of current style]   Click on Author Name under the Citations heading and un-check the option.   Then re-format the bibliography.   It might also be worth checking whether the author whose initial sometimes appears is recorded very slightly differently in different references (but is the same person). If you have someone listed as Smith, William and elsewhere as Smith, W. or William Smith EndNote sometimes tries to disambiguate them even though they really are all the same person.

As Rosemary indicates you can avoid it, by making the changes she suggests to the output style, but then authors that should be distinguished according to most publication guidelines, won't be (ie Kevin Dunn and Robert Dunn). While you say that his name is recorded the same in the various records, a subtle difference can trick Endnote, and they safest way to ensure they are the same is to copy one and replace the others with that exact version.

The problem with Find Full Text and sciencedirect seems to be ongoing.   EndnoteX4.02 still seems to still have the problem. Open URL link works fine... it goes right to where you can click on the pdf symbol and do a manual download. FFT fails, however. This is a pernicious issue as I can download only about 2/3's of journal articles with FFT. Given the expense of the program, I would expect sufficient resources would be available to fix an issue like this in a timely way :-). Of course, if the issue is fixed, someone please post what specifically fixed (fixes) it, and if there is something that I might be doing wrong, please post that, too. I just want (most of) my pdf's to download automatically...

Yes it appears to be broken again.  (see here) and I recommend there that we users identify the specific journals.  I have problems with some sciencedirect journals but not others.  But we need to let the developers know, I guess which ones.

Thanks for the reference attachment.    I am new to Endnote X5 and cannot access the Find Full Text function. Like everyone else, the instructions are very confusing. How can you have such a great product with instructions no one can make sense of?    I expected them to have full functionality with the release of endnote X5.    I am still unable to configure it to find full text. My library staff are as clueless as I am. What a pity.   I use the Capella library's access gateway. Does anyone know how to get this thing to work in my environment?   Please help.   Thank you.

I contacted ScienceDirect and here is part of what I received back:   "I did read through the community threads that you supplied in your email and I did confirm with our Product Team that the information presented in that thread listed as the official E-Helpdesk reply from Elsevier is correct. Unfortunately, this Find Full Text feature is not a feature that supports the ScienceDirect database. Whether it was Endnote or Elsevier who denied this feature, the end result is the same in that using the Find Full Text will not automatically retrieve ScienceDirect PDFs. As the thread mentions, there was an alternative option introduced with EndNote 3 that allowed the OpenURL resolver to replace the Find Full Text feature. The ScienceDirect Product Team mentioned that for this functionality to work, the OpenURL resolver needs to be configured in such a way that it will not only check for the entitlement in the source database (in this case ScienceDirect) but that it will also retrieve either a direct link to the PDF or a link to the article page. However, then the problem becomes that most OpenURL resolvers are not configured to retrieve this information because this is not a standard functionality."     I have Open URL working. The downside of this feature relative to FFT is the time it takes to use it. For one article it is fine. For many the times adds up enough to make EndNote cumbersome as *I guess* not only do you have to wait through all the pauses as the database with the pdf is accessed, but you also have to manually connect each endnote entry with each downloaded pdf, one at a time.

Since the template includes the title it seems odd that you want to exclude the information. But assuming that's what you want to do and it's correct for whatever you're doing, you'll need to modify the ACS output style's "Bibliography" template(s).   1. To access the ACS's bibliography template, go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT ACS.   2. Then in the ACS output style (refer to attached image which is taken of the ACS Nano output style) locate "Bibliography" in the left column then click to select: Templates.    3. Locate the Journal Article template then delete the Title field.  Also remove the comma after the Author field.     4. Exit the output style which will save the file as a "Copy" (e.g., ACS Nano Copy) so adjust both EndNote and MS Word to use the file "Copy" and not the original.

Different ACS journals have different style requirements: some require article title (e.g. ACS Chemical Biology), some do not. (e.g. JACS). That explains why someone would want to delete the title field from an output style.   All ACS styles require journal title abbreviations, so you will need to set up your journal term list to abbreviate journal names in your bibliography - e.g. Organic Letters  should be Org. Lett. I have instructions specifically for chemists on my Endnote page: http://chemistry.library.wisc.edu/writing/endnote.html#journal-term-lists   Emily

In EndNote X there is a arguments box in which you specify URL syntax when setting up a OpenURL connection (see screen dump). I can’t locate a corresponding  field in EndNote X3. Where can that be found?

Not sure which one goes where, but there are two sections of the Edit Preferences in endnote that might need this.  One is in "Find Full text" where I put my EZ-proxy link that triggers a login when you want to Find Full Text, and the other in "URLs and Links", which is more reminiscent of the earlier versions.    Perhaps someone who knows more can chip in here?

The output style is responsible for determining the appearance of both the in-text citations and bibliography. If there's an EndNote Web administrator at your institution/organization, he or she will be able to adjust the output style.  Otherwise you will need to download the references to your computer and adjust the output style on your own to fit your needs (which requires having the EndNote program on your computer).   On another note, to change (Parker, 2007) so the author's name appears outside of the parentheses is done by editing the citation. Deleting the parentheses is ineffective.  To edit the citation, if you're using Windows, just place your cursor on the citation then right-click to bring up the sub-menu, select EDIT CITATIONS, EXCLUDE AUTHOR - which result in having just the year appearing as: (2007).  Then just manually type-in the author's name to create: Parker (2007).  (EndNote X5 streamlines the process of removing the author and inserting the name before the year.)

Hi,   I recently upgraded to Endnote X4. I am not able to see all my references. I have over 700 in the library and have used them in a word doc, but for some reason, my library shows only about 550.   When I search for them in the library, I cannot see them, but am able to when I try inserting them in word (cite while you write).   This is driving me up the wall. Appreciate any help.   Thanks!

Can you provide a screen shot?  Have you updated X4 to the most recent (X4.0.2 I think) as what you might be seeing is only those refs that you have used in your manuscript (is it a long one?).  The original release of EndNoteX4 had a "feature" that after inserting a ref, only showed the group that was in use in the manuscript, as shown in the attached image.  In the update, which probably fixed some other things, they went back to what we all really wanted.  A few of the whole library when we want to put another ref in, as it is likely to be a new ref.  You should see the rest if you click higher up on the All References.  But what you really want to do is go to the Endnote "help" menu and choose "Endnote Program Updates".    If that isn't it, an image of the screen might help further.

Hello Keith,   A Site License version of EndNote X5 would not grant the users the ability to register for an EndNote Web account through the desktop software. This is something that can only be done with the Volume license. If you do have access to EndNote Web through your University's Web of Science license, end users should be able to setup an account and then plug those account details into the EndNote desktop software through the preferences under the Edit menu (or the EndNote menu on the Mac). Users who are having problems with this should contact Technical Support:   http://www.endnote.com/support/entechform.asp   If you feel you have the wrong license of the desktop software, I would suggest contacting your Sales representative.   Jason Berman Technical Sup Rep RS Thomson Reuters   Phone: +1 800-336-4474 thomsonreuters.com

Thanks, Jason, for that.   A colleague reports having problems registering for EndNote Web - message was "EndNote Web registration could not be completed at this time.  Please contact Technical Support".   She did have to request a password reminder during registration and wonders if that was the reason for the problem?    On getting the message, she went through the whole process again and it worked.    From EndNote itself, the message was "EndNote "Transfer References" could not connect to EndNote Web.  This may be due to a temporary internet or server error.  Please try again".       Keith

Hello Keith,   If this customer had an EndNote Web account prior to obtaining EndNote X5 and entered the account details into the EndNote Web Preferences of EndNote X5 without properly going through the Upgrade Activation, this would trigger an error if the option to include file attachments and figures was checked during a Transfer. Selecting the Password reminder in and of itself should not be a problem. If the problem persists, your colleague should definitely contact Technical Support so that we can troubleshoot further. Ideally I would like to be able to import the .RIS file however I cant seem to find a way to prevent it importing as a web page even when the filter I select is for journal article.   I have managed to custom the Ovid Medline template to import the text file I have however the file does not include a tagged date so citations are lacking a year which then requires manual input   Is there anything else I might be able to do to get the .RIS file to work or that I can advise my information source to do when selecting the citation type?   Thanks   Karen

Thanks for this advice. I renamed the filter and when downloading the complete citation as (suggested by another responder) I do get a better result with source and not URL's but this time I have no author details.   Why is Medline so difficult to export from?   I am begining to believe I will have to alter these records manually

What version of EndNote are you running along with the OS?  Assuming applicable EndNote patches have been applied and both EndNote and the OS are compatible, it might be time to contact tech support for verification whether the issue is with your setup or Medline: http://www.endnote.com/support/entechform.asp

That is not a serious problem.  Cite while you write is turned off.  You want to run "format bibliography" from the endnote tools, and make sure the correct output style is selected.  Also, you can turn CWYW on again from the third tab.  (enable)

What can I do to make the output file save the references in APA 6th format? When I was creating the bibliography, the Style pane was in Author-Date mode. Do I have to create the bibliography in a particular style to be able to output/export references in that style? Yes, you will need to select the style prior to exporting in order to have the exported references appear in the desired format.    For example, you are working with APA 6th Annotated but if you want the exported references to be changed to the basic APA 6th format suggest you also select this style via the Output Styles Manager (i.e., place a check mark in the box) so it's available in addition to the APA 6th Annotated style.  Then once you're ready to export, change the style from APA 6th Annotated to APA 6th, then export the references.

I tried that, but still get the default Author-Date style.

Can you attach a screen shot of the export dialog as you perform the dump?

Here's a screen shot. I am trying to export all of the references in a Group, so I highlight all of those references once I open the Group, and then hit the Up Arrow Export button, which gives me this screen shot. Prior to that I went to Edit, then Output Styles, and changed the Style to APA 6th Annotated, which is how I want to output file to read in Word 2010. But all I get is the basic default Author-Date format for the references. What am I doing wrong?

If you check the APA 6th's Annotated output style's templates, the field "Research Notes" is added to each template - so information in the Research Notes field will be exported along with the rest of the bibliographic field information noted in each template (see attached image).  So if you didn't have any information in the Research Notes field, nothing will be exported.   What information were you expecting to be exported - "Abstract"? If you wanted to have a different field such as "Abstract" exported, you will need to modify each of the templates by replacing "Research Notes" with "Abstract". (After modifying the templates, the style will be saved as a "Copy": APA 6th Annotated Copy. So adjust both EndNote and MS Word to use the "copy" file.)

I am expecting to import references formatted according to the APA style into a new Word 2010 file. I have used the Edit commands to choose APA 6th style, used the Export command to output the references to a Word 2010 file, and STILL all of the references come out formatted according to the basic default author-date style, and not the APA 6th style. I have tried to do this same procedure for the Ecology style, with the same results of generic author-date as output. Do I have a defective version of End Note X5, or is there something that I should be doing that will solve this problem?

By experimenting, I still am unable to make the APA styles work, but if I switch to the Ecology style and do not highlight all of the references in a Group but just highlight the Group in the My Library pane, I can get End Note to output all of the references in that Goup to a Word 2010 file in the Ecology style. I am OK using the Ecology style for my work.   Thank you for your help. I still do not understand why it does what it does with the APA styles or when I highlight the references, but right now the important thing for me is to get results, and I can get them using the method I described above with the Ecology style.

I helped a user at my university with the same error message ("EndNote Web registration could not be completed at this time.  Please contact Technical Support").    We called tech support and were told that some computers (e.g., Windows 7 systems) have firewall settings that prevent users from registering. We got the message on the user's laptop, but we were able to successfully activate the account on another computer. After it was activated, she could use it on her own machine to transfer references.

Hi, I had a problem with activation, but now solved:     I was doing this: Edit>Preferences>endnote web,  entering my email and my password, then Activate. "Please enter your e-mail address." I enter again, then this error message:  "EndNote Web registration could not be completed at this time.  Please contact Technical Support"   But Jason's post helped me. Because I had registered to endnote web before getting the license from my university, I thought maybe my web account has not recognized my license somehow. I didn't know how to make it work (through upgrading ...). So I did this: in my endnote web, I changed my email to another email of me, and then registered as a new user with my uni-email address. This time everything worked and now I am uploading all my references plus attachments to the web account.   I know this is not the best solution, I don't know how to remove my previous account! But this was fast for me that didn't have much time.
