I had the same problem when changed from windows vista to windows 7, with both word and end not running NOT as administrators. Then I changed the properties/compatibility mode of endnote.exe to windows vista (service pack2), in folder C:\Program Files\EndNote X1, and it worked!!!

Thomson Reuters:"Re: "Endnote X2 Bad File Name" when opening Word 2007" - 1 New Post - Community Subscription

Hmm, solved, but what a headache.....   So after trying for hours without result to find the source of the issue I decided to uninstall and completly clean the PC of Endnote X4 and RefMan 12. This involved the usual uninstall, then a complete search and removal of any lingering files and finally a complete search and clean of the registry including the current user plus the loaded hives of the default user and a non admin user.   This took forever....the shear volume of junk files and reg keys left after the uninstall made me wonder if the unistaller really did anything.   Anyway, with the PC rebooted I installed Endnote X4...admin and non admin users both had working Endnote toolbars and no errores....great!   So I went ona nd installed RefMan12 and applied the latest patch....checking word under the admin user, I now had the odd situation where the Endnot X4 tab now said Endnote X2 instead. So I ran a repair on Endnote X4 and hey presto, the word toolbar now had the correct name and no errors.   So I switched to a non admin user....now not only was the toolbar in word incorrectly named as Endnote X2 but also I was getting the same "Endnote X2 Bad File Name" error as before. So I decided to run RefManager and then Endnote. Upon Running word again, Endnote's toolbar had the correct name and the error had miraculously disappeared.   I have no idea why this hocus pocus worked, but it did. I still have no idea what was the cause of the issue, however it would seem that something in Reference Manage 12 messes about with the Endnote X4 installation/word toolbar. I have no idea if this is by design or indeed necessary, but it is rather frustrating. and potentially very confusing for less technically competant users than myself (not to mention totally off putting to the point of finding some software that coexists a lot better)   I hope my findings help others with this issue :)   Cheers,   Matt

Installing an output style involves saving then selecting the file.  I think the Bluebook Law-Review style is already loaded into the style manager so you'll just need to add the Bluebook brief.   1. To install an output style file, just double-click the file. This will launch the EndNote program and display the style file (see Image1). Then go to the EndNote toolbar, select FILE, SAVE AS.    2. At the save prompt, notice that the word "Copy" is added to the file name but delete it (unless you prefer saving it as a copy.  Now click the "Save" button. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second output style file.   3. Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, OPEN STYLE MANAGER. This will display the "EndNote Styles" box (see Image2).    4. To view, select and apply the output style, go to the toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES.  Both Bluebook styles are displayed. Click to select the style you want to use and it will appear in the upper portion of the library window.

I have the exact same issue and am wondering if this has been resolved on the forum. Many thanks. Jim P thilo wrote: Unfortunately now I got a blank space before citations excluding the author:   Example: "As Lawrence ( 2005) notes"   Interestingly this does not happen if I put the citation template in brackets (which I don't want to do for sometimes I don't need brackets).

Actually, I found that if I format it thus   Author Year   with no forced separation, then I can get   (1986)   The forced separation creates the space I don't want:   ( 1986)

So you are quoting a secondary source? What style are you using? In APA 6th you edit the intext citation by clicking on it and then using the 'Edit Citation' function (on the left of your Endnote toolbar in Word).   Type 'as cited in ' (without the quote marks and leaving a space after in) in the Prefix box and click OK.   So you'd end up with something like:   Brown states that "blah, blah, blah" (as cited in White, 2007)   Does that make sense?   Cathy

Did you try the procedure described in this  EndNote FAQ: http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/Database/faq4.asp

Yes I tried that procedure but still get the "locked" volume message when I try to open the file. Any other options?

I have heard about many good tools for work with word files, but one of them surprised me a lot. It could restore my long distance documents for short time, and moreover it might help in this issue also – how to repair word 2007 file.
