Problems with Mac computers and EndNote 6
Author: Trisha Reddy    Posted: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 11:45:17 +1300
Hello

I am wondering if anyone can help me with an EndNote 6 problem. I have just
started teaching Academic staff in our school using Mac computers.
Unfortunately I have had the following two problems;

1. Import Filter: after saving a .txt file to the desktop (which worked
fine), I was unable to select the file using the Choose File option in the
Import box. This is because the .txt file was greyed out and I was
therefore unable to select it.

2. Direct Export: while trying to use the Direct Export option from the File
Manager in Art Abstracts (an Ovid database) I got the message "Internet
Explorer doesn't know how to handle the type of file you selected..." after
I clicked the Save button in the database.

Any suggestions on the above problems? I must also point out that I am not
that familiar with Mac computers.

Thanks you very much
Trisha

Hi Trisha!

I've experienced the same thing with a Mac at "my" place. I have been able
to come around the problem, I think, but I just tried several different
solutions, none that I recall unfortunately. However, most of my problems
have been compability issues, that is, lousy Mac support of the service in
question. That made me use three different browsers to cope with my needs.
These days I usually manage with two (Safari and Mozilla, occationally
Explorer). So you could try using another browser to start with.

Good luck

i have had the same problem with Endnote 7 and
PubMed. I tried as was decribed in the manual
but there is no "save" box on the Pubmed window.
Saving the page as text gave same problem as you
describe.

Hi,

I am not sure I understand the problem, but if it is that some text
files are not recognized by EndNote, it could be a line ending problem.
Get a utility like TextWrangler to open your document and change line
endings to the Mac format. I know that one database I use (ASFA in
fisheries science) puts the result of my searches as text in the
browser's window, and when saved to disk, line endings are Unix (if I
use Safari), or Mac (if I use Internet Explorer, one of the rare
occasions it does better than Safari...). EndNote does not recognize
the file with Unix line endings.

TextWrangler changes the line endings to mac in one click and one save.
It is not free, but maybe free utilities do this too. I have not tried
with TextEdit, which comes free with OS X.

Why not use the connection option instead for PubMed? There is a one in the
connections folder. The only connection I've tried, but it worked just
great.

Re: Problems with Mac computers and EndNote 6
Author: Ulrich Beutner    Posted: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 09:13:04 +0200
Hi Trisha,
Your problems have been discussed several times on this platform. I don't
want to blame you for not knowing this, but I am surprised how many "odd"
answers you got. Thus, I will only quickly go through the solutions, for the
explanations have a look in the archive.
Problem 1:
MacOS 9: Press the shift key while clicking on the import command
MacOS X: Put Endnote in the Dock (or open Endnote). Pull the text file in
question on the Endnote icon while pressing the Alt and the Apple (•) at the
same time. When dragging the file on the Endnote icon in the doc, the icon
should turn grey. You will then be asked which Library to use and which
filter.

This will solve the problem, that you cannot open files for import. There
might be still problems with the import filters, but this is another issue

Problem 2:
Find out what file extension (like .txt) your database uses for export.
(Have a look in the Download manager).
Open the preferences of Internet Explorer (in OS 9 I think under Extras, but
I am not sure, long time I ago I used OS 9, in OS X it is under the
Explorer Menu point (on the left). Under Receiving Files select "File
Helpers". On the right select "Add". Under Description type a name you will
recognize (this is simply a name). In the field extension type the extension
you found from the Download Manager. Using OS X you can ignore the File Type
field. Under handling either use "Save to file" which simply saves the file
and you have to import it manually (see above). Or select "View with
Application" or "Postprocess with Application" (here I am not sure, use
trial and error). In both cases IE will ask you for an applicaton, select
Endnote. This should do the trick.

I hope you do not get the impression that the Mac OS is a clumpsy and user
unfriendly OS. This is certainly not the case, you just hit on two sore
points of the OS. Problem one is related to the change from OS 9 to OS X
combined with lousy programming from the Endnote people. Even under OS 9 the
shift trick was well hidden in the manual (under open library but not under
import) I always considered this a hidden copy protection. Under OS X it is
a pure Endnote programmers bug, that you cannot open .txt files.
Problem 2 is actually unrelated to the OS used. IE simply needs to know what
to do with a file with a certain file extension. While the people at
Microsoft went a long way of adding zillions of extensions, some they might
have missed or direct to the wrong application since it uses the same
extensions (e.g. Some databases download files with the .asp extension,
however OS X uses this extension for the Apples System Profile file. Thus,
you have to do the trick described above to redirect the file to Endnote)

Good luck
Ulrich

Re: Problems with Mac computers and EndNote 6

Trisha,

To answer problem number 1, EndNote 6 for Mac doesn't recognize text files
that are created by or associated with TextEdit, the default Mac OS X text
editor. (This is a known bug that was fixed in version 7.) One work-around
suggested to me by ISI support is to open the exported text file in MS Word
and resave it as a plain text file. I find that I also often have to change
the file name when re-saving it with Word for this to work. For some reason
EndNote will recognize MS Word plain text files, it will also recognize text
files created with SimpleText, the plain text editor for Mac OS 9.

-Robert.

I've tried TextEdit but it does not seem to work. However, both WordService
and BBEdit Lite should work, and they are both free. I have not personally
tried the WordService app.yet, but I did try BBEdit Lite and it opened the
changed file just fine. Good for me, as I also use ASFA a lot.

BBEdit can still be found at Versiontracker.com despite that BareBones
Software has withdrawn it from their web-site.
